Not a Fake: Why a Perfume from a Tester in a Store Smells Better Than a Bottle You Bought There

Perhaps each of us has had such a case in practice – you test the perfume in the store, you are delighted with the opening and the panache, you buy yourself a new bottle – and, oh horror, it smells completely different ! Don’t jump to the conclusion that the testers are deliberately doing “better” or that you have been sold a fake. This common phenomenon has a quite prosaic reason.

We have already told you why you should not store perfume in the bathroom and why you should keep a perfume box – if the bottle is there, you significantly extend the life of your favorite perfume.

This information will be useful in answering the question of why perfumes that are on the shelves of perfumeries, because testers often smell brighter and stronger than those purchased in the package.

There’s even a kind of urban legend that testers specifically make better perfumes so they’re more willing to buy perfume. Of course, this is not so, no perfume house has a separate production of testers, everything is explained much more prosaically.

The testers are freely available on open shelves. They have no lids (the tester “breathes”), and the temperature on the shelves is usually above average due to active lighting. The light also affects the contents of the testers. All this transforms the fragrant raw materials – the perfume or toilet water evaporates, the aroma becomes more saturated and opens up faster (but spoils faster – if, of course, there is time).

That is why there is often an effect due to which the aroma of the tester can seem more charming and attractive.
