What is heat for them: how to protect your nails from summer stress (and even protect yourself from cancer!)

We know perfectly well that we need to protect our skin and hair from harmful UV rays, but for some reason we forget that summer stress poses a serious danger to our nails. We tell you how to minimize the risks!

Thanks to the advice of beauty experts in summer, we can no longer afford to leave the house without a layer of cream with SPF on the face and a hat or a protective spray on the hair. But did you know that our nails also need reliable protection against the sun and other dangers of the hot season? Remember a few simple tips to help them stay healthy and beautiful.

Do not take care! In our articles, we collect the latest scientific data and the opinions of authoritative health experts. But remember: only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment.

Apply sunscreen

Even when applying SPF cream on hands and feet, it is unable to provide full coverage. Therefore, do not be lazy to specifically apply sunscreen to the cuticles and the area around the nail bed. This will reduce the risk of developing the insidious squamous cell carcinoma under the nails, which is often mistaken for psoriasis or joint inflammation.

This type of melanoma, as a rule, appears precisely because of prolonged exposure to the sun. It usually affects the area under the thumbnail plate, but in general it can develop on any nail. The cancer manifests as dark marks on the nails, which are mistaken for bruises. It is important to reapply sunscreen after washing your hands or swimming in a pond to reduce the risk of this type of cancer.

Another reliable way to protect against cancer is a manicure carried out in accordance with all the stages: a base, 2 layers of varnish and an additional layer of fortifier for the nails. Look for models with a matte finish that block UV rays.

Limit contact with water, sand and other aggressive factors

We don’t always realize what tests we put our nails through on a daily basis – but to no avail! We harm them, among other things, through frequent contact with water during daily household chores. When moisture enters the nail, the cells expand and then suddenly contract. This process leads to a weakening of the plate: as a result, the nails exfoliate more and break more often.

Household chemicals serve as an additional test. The ingredients that make up cleaning products aggressively affect the nails and cuticles, robbing them of their natural nutrition. A good solution would be to use household gloves when cleaning or washing dishes. By the way, you can also go to the beach with gloves for maximum protection (by the way, Kim Kardashian has already done that!).

Nails also need protection. Choose comfortable beach shoes and give up the pleasant habit of digging your feet into the sand. Frequent contact with a fine abrasive leads to drying of the cuticle and the formation of chips on the nails.

Also, if possible, reduce your stay in bodies of water. After disembarking, do not forget to wet your hands and feet with a towel, lubricate them with a moisturizer containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid or lanolin in the composition, then apply a screen solar on the area around the plate.
