4 types of damaged hair: what to do in each case

It happens to the best of us: even if you don’t dye your hair or use a straightener, that doesn’t mean your curls are safe.

For example, in the summer it is enough to have a picnic – and the sun will do its dirty work. How to save your hair? Here’s what an expert has to say about types of hair damage and how to fix it.

Chemical damage

Bleach, dye, perms can all make hair brittle and break easily. “For example, when bleaching, chemicals penetrate the shaft to destroy the pigment – this makes it weaker,” says celebrity hairstylist Bernardo Vasconcelos.

It is better, according to the hairdresser, to choose from the beginning products that act gently on the hair, and not aggressively. However, if the damage has already been done, the main task is to moisturize the strands: look for products that give such an effect and use them constantly.

Thermal damage

If you constantly use a hair dryer, curling iron or flat iron, you can dry out your curls. According to Vasconcelos, heat damages the hair cuticle and destroys the bonds between the keratin fibers that compose it.

Heat damage is easier to prevent than to cure: be sure to use heat protectants to act as a barrier to keep your hair from losing moisture. If you have already encountered problems, for some time abandon “hot” tools, regularly make a mask for damaged hair and use keratin balms.

UV damage

The sun’s rays can also damage the cuticles – because of them, the hair fades and becomes thin. In this case, restoring the beauty of the hairstyle is especially difficult, according to Vasconcelos, so it is very important to focus on prevention. “Wear hats and use leave-in products with UV protection,” he advises.

Mechanical damage

Rough manipulation of the hair leads to it: “aggressive” detangling, too frequent combing, puff and pulling hairstyles – tight braids and tails. According to Bernardo, in this case it is also better to avoid “damage” to the strands – for this you need to take soft toothbrushes, comb your hair from the ends, never go to bed with a wet head and do not do not rub but wipe it gently with a towel.
