Singer Bonnie Tyler returned home to Wales for the last time as hundreds of fans lined the streets of Mumbles to say goodbye following her death at age 75.

The pop star's hearse, covered with the flag of Wales, traveled through the coastal village while residents and followers gathered along the route to pay tribute, with some waiting outside her former home to leave flowers as a final memory.

Following a ceremony for family and friends held in Swansea, Bonnie Tyler made her final journey through the streets of Skewen, the village where she grew up. An 18-year-old fan who joined mourners said that Tyler's songs really touched many people in Wales and that they loved her very much.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales, the singer rose to become a global star on the strength of anthems including It's a Heartache and Holding Out For a Hero. Her long career also led her to represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, and in 2022 she was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her contribution to music.

Four weeks at number one

Her biggest success came with Total Eclipse of the Heart, which became the only number one hit of her career. Written and produced by Jim Steinman, the song reached the top spot on the charts in 1983 and remained at number one for four weeks, earning Tyler a Grammy Award nomination.

Four decades after its release, Total Eclipse of the Heart has accumulated over one billion streams on digital platforms and more than one billion views on YouTube. It remains the only song by a Welsh artist to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, where Billboard ranked it among the greatest pop songs of all time. The track has also repeatedly returned to music charts over the years through cover versions recorded by other artists.

The story behind the eclipse

The track originated when Tyler and Steinman were both seeking a fresh artistic direction. Tyler wanted to move away from the country-rock sound of her early hits to pursue a more powerful and theatrical style. Steinman, who had previously worked with American singer Meat Loaf, was coming off a commercially difficult period.

Their meeting produced one of the most recognizable musical partnerships of the 1980s. The song broke standard radio conventions of the era, spanning seven minutes in its original version as a dramatic composition built with piano, guitars, backing vocals, and grand production. A shorter edit of about four and a half minutes was created for radio stations, and 11 weeks after entering the Billboard chart, the single reached number one.

A signature vocal style

Tyler's distinctive raspy voice was partly the result of an unexpected medical outcome. In the late 1970s, she underwent surgery to remove vocal cord nodules, and the procedure left her with a harsher tone that became her defining trademark.

That combination of vocal power and emotional vulnerability matched the intensity of Steinman's song. Tyler died on July 9, 2026, following several medical complications, leaving behind a musical legacy that continues to resonate around the world.
