Britney Spears has spoken out about the lingering emotional damage caused by her 13-year conservatorship, revealing in a candid video that she remains single.
The 44-year-old pop star recorded herself posing in black lingerie at her Thousand Oaks mansion on Friday evening. Wearing a black choker necklace and dark eye makeup with long blonde hair flowing over her chest, Spears shared a deep reflection on her past and present life with her nearly 42 million Instagram followers.
"I feel like, still to this day, people don't realize the real damage that was done to my heart and soul in the conservatorship," Spears wrote in her post.
Addressing her relationship status two years after her divorce from 32-year-old Sam Asghari, the singer confirmed she is not dating anyone. "I've been single for so long," she told her followers.
Reflections on Fame and Motherhood
Spears began her post by looking back at how her perspective on relationships and public life has changed. "I actually miss the way I respected people so much that there was a genuine mystery of acute oneness when we were together, which was sacred," she wrote.
The star, who shares sons Sean, 20, and Jayden, 19, with ex-husband Kevin Federline, admitted that performing became increasingly uncomfortable as she matured. "I was painfully shy, but I got to be someone different on stage," Spears wrote.
"After having kids, though, I think that game was beyond overdone. I felt so silly and embarrassed. I think it's easier when you're younger to go there," she added.
Criticism of Father Jamie Spears
Her Friday post followed a similarly candid upload on Thursday, in which she criticized her 74-year-old father, Jamie Spears. Spears recalled that early in her career she would "get asthma and start shaking" if she had to meet more than 10 people.
She stated that her father later forced her to meet "70 people" at a time, which "literally hurt" and made her feel "like a robot." Spears said she felt proud of herself for "shutting all that down" because "for too many years it was forced."
History of the Conservatorship
The American pop icon was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship in February 2008 following public mental health crises, hospitalizations, and intense media scrutiny. A conservatorship is a legal arrangement where a court appoints a guardian to manage an individual's financial decisions, career, and personal liberties.
Jamie Spears served as the primary conservator for most of the arrangement, insisting his control over her finances and personal life was meant to protect her wellbeing. Spears repeatedly described the arrangement as "abusive" before a court terminated the conservatorship in 2021 after nearly 14 years.
Legal Troubles and Current Life
Since regaining her freedom, Spears frequently records dance videos inside her southern California home. However, the Kentwood, Louisiana native has also faced recent legal difficulties.
Spears was arrested on March 4 in the Westlake Village neighborhood of California, near her mansion, and charged with driving under the influence (DUI). She pleaded guilty at her arraignment through her lawyer, Michael Goldstein, choosing not to attend Ventura County Superior Court in person.
Following her guilty plea, Spears was sentenced to 12 months of probation and ordered to pay a $571 fine. The court ordered her to enroll in a three-month alcohol and drug education program, see a psychologist once a week, and see a psychiatrist twice a month. She is also prohibited from consuming alcohol and drugs, with the exception of prescription medication.
