The manager attacked by actor Rafael Cardoso in a restaurant in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, was recovering from surgery when the incident occurred. Security cameras recorded the moment João Fernando, 64, was punched and kicked last Friday, 1am. The Civil Police are investigating the case.

In a newspaper interview The globe, the victim said she recently underwent surgery for a hernia and tried to protect herself from the attacks, but was still injured. In a press release, Rafael Cardoso’s advisor said he was very sorry, had publicly apologized and was under the influence of drugs.

“Of course it hurt me. I was injured and went to the Medico-Legal Institute to undergo a forensic examination. […] I am at rest until today, I can’t exercise. I have three months to recover from the surgery. A screen has been placed. It was an inguinal hernia operation. Obviously that’s why I didn’t even fight, I didn’t even defend myself. I just defended my surgery. I did nothing but try to defend myself from this madness that happened to him”, explained the victim.

Rafael Cardoso says he repents

The case is investigated by the 16th DP (Barra da Tijuca). The actor was summoned to testify this Tuesday the 5th but, according to O Globo, his lawyers have signed a petition asking for the postponement.

On Monday the 4th, Rafael’s press office published a note stating that the actor is sorry and will keep away from social media and his business, to retire for medical treatment.

“The actor and businessman Rafael Cardoso is very sorry for the latest events and publicly apologizes. The actor was under the influence of drugs, but this does not justify the mistake and he will answer for the consequences in all appropriate areas From that moment on, he retired to take care of his health. […] We count on the goodwill and solidarity of all of you, friends, fans, followers and press”, reads the statement.

How did the attack go?

The newspaper also published images of the case. The video shows that the actor appears dressed in a black T-shirt and shorts, but barefoot. First he approached the waiter, who was speaking to him, and they both pointed to the manager, who had his back turned, on the sidewalk.

Noticing that Rafael was upset, the waiter tried to restrain him when he tried to approach. Shortly thereafter, the manager approached the actor, who spoke to him very close to his face. João Fernando then turned his back on Rafael as he tried to walk away.

The actor seemed to get angry and started shouting. The waiter tried to grab him by the arm, but the actor slapped him on the hand to free him and walked towards the manager, punching the victim in the back of the head. The two advanced out of the camera’s range.

Moments later, the employee reappeared and rushed into the establishment, followed by the plaintiff. The two ran around the tables until they returned outside, at which point the victim fell. According to the images, Rafael chased the coach and kicked him several times until he was held back by four men.

João Fernando got up, but Rafael Cardoso soon followed him. The two crossed the street and, after the commotion began to attract people’s attention, the actor walked away.
