Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic have joined Apple TV and Legendary's new MonsterVerse series starring Wyatt Russell, according to Deadline. The upcoming production expands the television franchise following the success of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Nielsen is widely known for her roles in feature films including Gladiator and Wonder Woman. Katic gained popularity starring in television series such as Castle and Absentia.
Apple TV and Legendary have not disclosed which characters Nielsen and Katic will play in the series. Their roles remain secret, matching the strategy used for previously announced cast members.
Cast and creative team
The two actors join an ensemble cast headed by Wyatt Russell, who returns as young Colonel Lee Shaw. The character played a central role in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, where Russell played the younger version of Shaw while his father, Kurt Russell, portrayed the character in a later period of his life.
The cast also features Millie Brady, Pilou Asbæk, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, and Nyasha Hatendi. The specific character roles for all five actors also remain undisclosed.
Joby Harold serves as creative lead and showrunner for the project. Harold previously worked as showrunner on Obi-Wan Kenobi and served as an executive producer on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Wyatt Russell executive produces the series alongside his starring role.
J.D. Dillard will direct the pilot episode. Production is being handled by Legendary Television, Safehouse Pictures, and Toho, the company that owns the rights to Godzilla.
Cold War storyline and plot details
The untitled production functions as a spin-off and prequel to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It features an independent storyline focused on an unexplored period in the history of Lee Shaw.
The narrative takes place in 1984 during the Cold War. The plot follows Colonel Lee Shaw during a secret mission behind enemy lines, where he must face a massive threat.
Shaw's mission is to prevent Soviet forces from unleashing a new Titan. The creature possesses enough power to destroy the United States and alter the course of the Cold War.
The production combines 1980s action and espionage thriller elements with giant MonsterVerse creatures. This approach marks a shift from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which used multiple timelines to explore the Monarch organization and its history with Titans. The new show focuses on direct action, espionage, and creature threats.
MonsterVerse expansion and Prague production
The series represents another step in Apple TV and Legendary's strategy to expand the MonsterVerse beyond feature films centered on Godzilla and Kong. The most recent movie in the franchise was Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, released in 2024.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters demonstrated that the MonsterVerse could succeed in a television format. Following the show's renewal, Apple TV announced the development of multiple spin-off projects, with the Lee Shaw series being one of them.
Apple TV has not set an official release date or confirmed a final title for the production. Filming is currently underway in Prague, with additional details about the storyline and secret roles expected to emerge in the coming months.
