Demi Lovato and The Jonas Brothers hit the red carpet premiere for Camp Rock 3 on Tuesday night as Lovato confirmed her return as Mitchie Torres. Lovato and the band serve as executive producers on the third film. The story opens Camp Rock once again as new talent compete for a spot as the opening act for Connect 3, played by the Jonas Brothers.
The original Camp Rock debuted on Disney Channel in 2008, almost two decades ago. A total of 8.9 million viewers tuned in on premiere night, making it the third highest viewed Disney Channel Original Movie at the time. The film propelled Lovato and The Jonas Brothers to global stardom.
New talent stars Malachi Barton and Liamani Segura join the cast for the third installment. Lovato previously played Mitchie in the 2008 original and in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam two years later. The first movie soundtrack featured her debut single This Is Me, which reached number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Demi Lovato Addiction and Recovery
Lovato has spoken openly about her struggles with mental health and her stints in rehab following a 2018 drug overdose hospitalisation. Her substance abuse began earlier while filming the second movie, when she started using cocaine. In 2010, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during treatment at Timberline Knolls in Illinois for a nervous breakdown, bulimia, self-harm, and cocaine and alcohol addictions.
Lovato told The Huffington Post in 2013: "I couldn't go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine, and I would bring it on airplanes. I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep, and I would do it right there." During this period, her co-star Alyson Stoner noticed her purging in the bathroom. Lovato recalled speaking to Stoner: "You followed me into the bathroom because I was purging. And you followed me and talked to me, and I was really grateful that no one shunned me or shamed me and you were very understanding."
Following treatment, Lovato lived in a sober-living facility in Los Angeles for more than a year. She remained clean until her 2018 relapse on six years of sobriety, which she admitted in her song Sober. She suffered an opioid overdose after taking heroin laced with fentanyl during a night out, leaving her temporarily blind and with brain damage after three strokes and a heart attack in hospital.
Lovato also spoke out about eating disorders and distorted body image perception. She revealed her management would only allow her to eat a watermelon cake on her birthday to encourage weight loss. She told CBS Sunday Morning: "I didn’t control any of my life at that period of time every time I was in a hotel room my phone was taken out of the room so I couldn't order room service."
Lovato has since turned her life around after getting sober and marrying musician husband Jordan Lutes. Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music in 2020, she reflected on her mental health journey.
Lovato said: "I've dealt with depression and suicidal ideation since I was seven years old, and that's something that I've been very vocal about. I've talked about it for years. And so today, I don't take it lightly. I easily could have been someone that wasn't having this interview today. So, I'm grateful that I've had the support and the team around me to help me get through this time. And what I just want everyone else to know is that I've been there and you can get past it too. It can be very, very dark, but we have to remember that we can't seek permanent solutions for temporary problems, because life ebbs and flows. And just as happiness can be fleeting, sadness as well. So, we have to hold onto that hope, and we have to just keep fighting and powering through."
The Jonas Brothers Split and Reunion
Brothers Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, and Kevin Jonas were teenagers when they left their small town in New Jersey in 2005 to record their first studio album. By 2007, the band signed to Hollywood Records and debuted on the US Billboard 200 chart with the song Year 3000. They became well known for wearing purity rings to signify staying virgins until marriage before breaking out globally in Camp Rock.
The brothers famously fell out in 2013, refusing to speak to one another and pursuing solo projects. Joe Jonas spoke about the fallout in 2019: "In 2013, we all wanted to create something on our own and were just trying to force it into what was going on. We were going through the motions, without the heart of it.. The way we communicated to each other wasn't healthy anymore."
After resolving their differences, the group released the albums Happiness Begins in 2019, The Album in 2023, and Greetings from Your Hometown in 2025. Joe, Nick, and Kevin Jonas are reprising their roles as Shane, Nate, and Jason Gray in Camp Rock 3.
Joe Jonas Personal Life and Projects
Joe Jonas also experienced personal challenges during a year-long divorce battle with ex-wife Sophie Turner. He filed for divorce in September 2023 following months of split rumors, with custody and financial proceedings concluding a year later. Meanwhile, the band embarked on their Five Albums. One Night tour and released the Christmas movie A Very Jonas Christmas Movie, scheduled for Disney+ on November 14.
Alyson Stoner Mental Health Struggles
Co-star Alyson Stoner has detailed the mental and physical toll of childhood fame. Speaking in 2017 about her early career, Stoner said: "Living in that little box, being a part of that machine, it takes a huge toll on you. The competition, narcissism, perfectionism, the pressure, schedule, the traumatizing experiences that we can never talk about because we're either under contract, or we'll get shot, or other things will happen to us if we open our mouths."
Stoner was 15 years old during the filming of Camp Rock and developed multiple eating disorders. In a 2019 YouTube video, she said: "I started working in entertainment when I was six years old. Being In the public eye growing up brought a lot of criticism especially about my appearance. We strive to keep this illusion of unattainablilty. But behind the scenes, we’re hurting ourselves to reach that limit. I ended up going to rehab for three different eating disorders: anorexia, exercise bulimia and binge eating. I believe it was just a response to a chaotic and unpredictable environment."
Rehab and Medical Diagnoses
Stoner developed industry-induced anxiety at age six, experiencing heart palpitations, hair loss, and seizures that caused social issues with peers. Her conditions progressed into anorexia nervosa, exercise bulimia, and binge-eating disorder. Casting directors turned her away and advised her to focus on her health as she ate under 700 calories a day, exercised two to eight hours daily, and recorded polyunsaturated fat and added sugar grams for every bite.
At age 17, Stoner admitted herself to rehab after being hospitalised for eating disorders. During treatment, doctors diagnosed her with generalized anxiety disorder, OCD tendencies, and alexithymia, a condition impairing emotional identification often linked to PTSD. Stoner explained: "I had actually wanted to get help for some time, and my schedule didn’t allow for it. So I had already needed hospitalisation, but I had to complete projects. The second that I finished the contract, I told my family that I was going. They knew. Everyone around knew."
