Demon Hunter sues Netflix over KPop Demon Hunters title

Seattle metal band Demon Hunter has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, alleging the hit movie KPop Demon Hunters infringes on its registered trademark.

Demon Hunter sues Netflix over KPop Demon Hunters title

American metal band Demon Hunter has filed a lawsuit against Netflix over the title of its hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters.

The Seattle-based Christian metal group claims that the massive popularity of the movie and its expansion into music, merchandise, and live shows is causing widespread confusion among the public and directly damaging its career.

The legal action names streaming service Netflix and Netflix Studios, as well as live music promoter AEG Presents, which is handling an upcoming 150-city concert tour for the fictional group HUNTR/X featured in the movie.

Demon Hunter was founded in Seattle, Washington, in the year 2000 as a heavy metal group with Christian themes. The band holds registered trademark rights for the name Demon Hunter across several commercial categories and maintains that the movie franchise is completely overshadowing its brand identity.

Evidence of consumer confusion

To demonstrate the alleged confusion in court, the band stated that it received an email from a person who spent 500 dollars on concert tickets for one of Demon Hunter's performances, believing they were buying tickets to see the stars of the animated movie.

The lawsuit also claims that a television program contacted the metal band seeking to interview one of the composers of the film after the movie won an Academy Award.

Demon Hunter argued in the filing that adding the term KPop before Demon Hunters is not sufficient to differentiate the two brands. The band compared the situation to someone launching music acts or concert tours under names such as KPop Metallica, KPop U2, or KPop Black Sabbath.

As part of the lawsuit, Demon Hunter is seeking the recovery of profits obtained by Netflix and Netflix Studios, along with preliminary injunctions and additional financial compensation.

Netflix response and franchise success

Netflix responded to the legal action by stating that the accusations lack any foundation. The company said that it created a global Oscar-winning phenomenon with KPop Demon Hunters that has inspired fans around the world through its music, narrative, and characters, adding that it expects to defend the matter vigorously in court.

The animated feature Las Guerreras K-pop, known in English as KPop Demon Hunters, became the most-watched movie on the Netflix streaming platform and earned two Oscar awards. In addition to the upcoming world tour, Netflix has already planned a movie sequel for release in 2029.

K-pop awards controversy and BTS

The legal dispute arises alongside wider scrutiny of the K-pop music industry, where South Korean group BTS has drawn media attention after receiving a nomination for Best K-Pop Artist at this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

The VMAs nomination came just weeks after BTS announced it would not submit entries for the Grammy Awards. The group based its decision on a critical stance regarding how major international music ceremonies categorize Asian performers, pushing for music to be evaluated on quality rather than restricted by language or regional tags.

While the Recording Academy expressed an intention to engage in dialogue and improve Asian representation, BTS has remained silent on whether it will accept the VMAs honor. The upcoming choice by BTS is expected to influence how international music awards handle diversity and inclusion in the future.
