Disney Live-Action Tangled Film Set for March 2028 Release

Disney has officially announced that its upcoming live-action film adaptation of Tangled will premiere in cinemas worldwide on March 31, 2028, following a reveal at the D23 fan event at the Honda Center.

The studio confirmed the global release date during its flagship D23 convention, confirming that audiences will have to wait a year and a half to see the animated classic brought to life with real actors.

In addition to fixing the release date, Disney showcased a brief clip from the feature film to attendees gathered inside the arena, providing the first official look at the project.

First Footage Shown at D23

The preview footage opened with a shot of Rapunzel's iconic long blonde hair spread across a flight of medieval stairs.

The camera then tilted upwards to reveal the face of lead actress Teagan Croft, before transitioning to a scene set in a narrow alleyway with tunnels.

Disney has confirmed the theatrical release date for the live-action Tangled film.

In the clip, actress Kathryn Hahn emerged from behind a door in the alleyway and called out Rapunzel's name, prompting widespread cheers from the audience at the Honda Center.

The enthusiastic reaction highlighted strong fan approval for Hahn's casting as the story's main villain, Mother Gothel, following a social media post of the moment shared on X by entertainment outlet Deadline.

Cast and Creative Team

Australian filmmaker Michael Gracey has been confirmed as director for the live-action feature. Gracey is best known for directing the hit musical film The Greatest Showman and the biographical musical drama Better Man.

The principal cast for the adaptation was revealed earlier in the year, starring Teagan Croft in the role of Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as the charming rogue Flynn Rider.

Croft previously starred in the superhero series Titans, while Manheim gained prominence through Disney's Zombies franchise. Hahn recently headlined the Marvel Studios series Agatha All Along.

Hahn steps into the role of Mother Gothel, the manipulative figure who keeps Rapunzel hidden away from the outside world inside an isolated tower.

Legacy of the Animated Original

The upcoming film is a direct adaptation of Disney's 2010 computer-animated feature Tangled, which retold the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Rapunzel.

In the original animated film, Mandy Moore voiced Rapunzel, a young princess with magic hair locked in a tower, while Zachary Levi provided the voice of the fugitive thief who helps her explore the outside world and discover her true identity.

The animated movie's voice ensemble also featured Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel, alongside supporting roles from Ron Perlman, Brad Garrett, and Jeffrey Tambor.

Tangled was a major commercial and critical success for Disney Animation, earning 607.6 million dollars at the global box office, including 200.8 million dollars across North America.

The 2028 release will join Disney's ongoing slate of live-action reimaginings of its animated catalogue, following previous successful adaptations such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.
