Edward Furlong, who turns 49 on Sunday, was spotted out with a friend in Los Angeles on Friday, stopping by a grocery store before eating tacos from a street vendor. He was dressed in a black crew-neck T-shirt, aviator sunglasses, and textured brown pants.
Furlong first became famous in 1991 when director James Cameron cast him, with no prior acting credits, as John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. The role made him one of Hollywood’s most talked-about young actors.
His career trajectory changed after he appeared in the 1998 drama American History X. He began struggling with addiction and entered rehab for the first time in 2000, followed by years of relapses and legal troubles. Prolonged crystal meth use visibly affected his appearance and health, and he did not agree to have his teeth replaced with veneers until 2022.
In recent years, Furlong has spoken about turning his life around. In a 2024 interview with the Daily Mail he said he had relaunched his career and was celebrating a second chance, having appeared in The Forest Hills and Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep. He said it felt great to be back on set and sober.
The Los Angeles outing came shortly after Furlong missed a planned appearance at Melbourne Metro Comic Con, scheduled for July 18 and 19. He had been set to appear alongside fellow Terminator cast member Linda Hamilton, 69, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, with fans promised the chance to take photos and get autographs.
The day before the event, the convention’s official Instagram account announced he would not be attending, stating that due to unforeseen circumstances Furlong had been unable to make his flight to Australia and that no alternative flight would get him to Melbourne in time. The statement added that Furlong was extremely disappointed and had assured organizers he would travel to Australia in the near future.
The Daily Mail said it had reached out to Furlong for comment but had not heard back.
