Brazilian medical drama series Emergência 53 wrapped up its first season on streaming platform Globoplay on Thursday, August 27, leaving several storylines unresolved while awaiting an official decision on a second season.
The first season reached its conclusion with the release of its final five episodes on the platform. Globoplay has not yet confirmed whether the production will be renewed for a second run, though the final developments leave room for new storylines involving Unit 53.
The series follows emergency medical personnel working in mobile response units, blending high-stakes street rescues with the personal struggles of each team member. In the season finale, Irene steps down as head of Unit 53, handing leadership over to Glória and reshaping team dynamics. Meanwhile, paramedic Manuela returns to duty after a turbulent period to join a major rescue operation during heavy rainfall. Personal relationships also shift, with Duda and Átila moving forward together, while Glória enters a new stage of life alongside Selma.
Cast and Legendary Brazilian Talent
Emergência 53 features a lead ensemble including Yara de Novaes, Emilio Dantas, Valentina Herszage, Ana Hikari and Jaffar Bambirra. The production also features legendary Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro in her latest audiovisual appearance. Montenegro portrays Dona Laura, the mother of Irene. Dona Laura is an elderly woman who leads a bohemian lifestyle filled with gambling, smoking and alcohol while dealing with ongoing health problems.
Montenegro is widely regarded as one of Brazil's most celebrated performers, having achieved international acclaim and an Academy Award nomination during her distinguished decades-long career. Globoplay, the subscription streaming service owned by Latin American media conglomerate Grupo Globo, commissioned the series to expand its catalog of original domestic dramas.
Creative Team and Creative Origins
The series was created by filmmaker Claudio Torres alongside director Andrucha Waddington. The project is a family affair for Montenegro, as Torres is her son and Waddington is her son-in-law. The creators collaborated with physician Márcio Maranhão to maintain medical authenticity throughout the episodes.
This creative trio previously joined forces on the acclaimed Brazilian television medical series Sob Pressão. That earlier hit drama ran for five seasons on TV Globo and Globoplay, earning praise for its realistic portrayal of public healthcare in Rio de Janeiro and spawning a two-part special episode dedicated to the Covid-19 pandemic.
