The Empire State Building will be lit in tie-dye colors this Saturday to celebrate the birthday of the late Jerry Garcia, the American singer, guitarist and songwriter born in California in 1942.
Garcia would have turned 84. The building described him as a beloved American musician known primarily as the founding member, principal songwriter, lead guitarist and vocalist of the Grateful Dead, a rock band that rose to fame during the counterculture movement of the 1960s.
The Empire State Building said it has worked with Dead and Company, a band that includes former Grateful Dead members, over the years, staging light shows synchronized to the music. On June 24, 2017, it synchronized with a live performance of “Touch of Gray” during a Dead and Company concert at Citi Field in New York.
Garcia remained with the Grateful Dead until his death on August 9, 1995, at age 53, from a heart attack. He also maintained side projects and released solo albums throughout his career.
