A few statements by McConaughey could turn this entire story around.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson announced in March that they will reunite on screen after “EDtv” and “True Detective” in a new comedy for Apple TV+ from creator David West Read. The series features fictionalized versions of themselves as they reunite their families under one roof on a Texas ranch. ‘Brother From Another Mother’ aka brother from another mother, the project is called, so taking into account the real resemblance between McConaughey and Harrelson, this story tells itself, especially considering what the first of his hypothetical relatives has just told.
Although the series title evokes McConaughey and Harrelson’s real-life friendship over decades, McConaughey hinted in an interview on Kelly Ripa’s podcast that he is actually questioning whether Harrelson is really his brother. It all stems from the revelation that McConaughey’s mother knew Harrelson’s father, perhaps intimately.
“You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, it’s always been kind of a murky line,” McConaughey said. “And that’s part of our romance, right? My kids call him Uncle Woody. Their children call me Uncle Matthew. And when you see photos of us, my family thinks that many of his photos are mine. His family thinks a lot of my photos are of him.”
“In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families,” McConaughey continued. “And my mom is there and she’s like, ‘Woody, I met your dad.’ Everybody noticed the ellipsis my mom left after ‘I met,’ it had a double meaning.”
The revelation led McConaughey to investigate his family history. “We kept figuring out what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found that the father [de Harrelson] I was on leave at the same time my mother and father were going through their second divorce. Then there are possible receipts and places in West Texas where there might have been a meeting, or an encounter, or a ‘knew’ moment.”
Whether or not this real-life question factors into the Apple TV+ comedy series remains to be seen. The actors have not yet decided to take a DNA test to obtain evidence about a possible family connection between them.
“Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s get [las pruebas de ADN]’, because what’s left for him?” McConaughey said. “It’s a little more difficult for me, because he’s asking me to take a chance and say ‘wait a minute, are you trying to tell me that my father may not be my father after 53 years believing it? I have a little more skin in the game.”
In the “Brother From Another Mother” logline, Apple TV+ calls the series “a heartfelt love story of an odd couple that revolves around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.”
The joke can be very serious, and it would be difficult to differentiate between fiction and reality.
