‘We will take over the whole country,’ says Grag Queen, who has overcome bullying and is now experiencing a national outcry

Winner of an international drag singer reality show, she spoke exclusively for Terra about the future of art and personal experience

One day you have to prepare yourself psychologically to endure bullying at school. Years later you are feted all over the country when you win an international singing competition. This is a summary of the life of Queen Grag. The drag queen, originally from Canela, in Rio Grande do Sul, is another artist of the genre who has achieved international recognition, together with Pabllo Vittar and Glória Groove.

“We will rule the whole country,” the artist emphasized in an exclusive interview with Terra. “Drag from all facets is emerging. There are drag communicators, there are podcasts, there are drag, pop stars, rock stars, sertanejo and we are f*da, people! The best! We will show everyone that we do better than everyone else and suddenly everyone will be carried away, I’m sure,” he points out.

For Grag, drag is a purpose, not just beauty. “Being drag, especially drag in Brazil, is the result of a lot of love for art and a great desire to do it. Besides being a refuge for all the bitternesses we have gone through in life, and all the problems we have to face, drag it’s art, it’s politics,” he says.

It’s interesting to think that someone who has come this far in his career still sees his profession as an artistic haven. But, as Grag relates, that’s the reality for many people who have faced bullying at an early age.

Besides being originally from a small town in a conservative countryside, Grag was raised in the evangelical church in a family of Arab descent. And this, according to her, has left deep marks on her. “So, it turned out that she was born and raised a little girl who learned to hate everything she stood for, everything her existence envisioned for herself,” she reveals.

“Today, having people who like me, having people who look up to me, it’s really crazy. It’s like living these two stories in the same life. He no longer needs to be afraid, that now he no longer needs to feel insecure,” he adds.

It is from these places that the inspirations for the texts he composes are born. “I feel artistically responsible to tell people like me, and who listen to me, that everything is fine, that there is nothing left to fix. Go live your life, go to work, go believe. I am proof living that you can believe it, yes you can get somewhere,” he concludes.
