The new king and queen of Denmark visited favelas and museums in Brazil

Frederik and Mary take the throne at a turbulent time in their twenty-year marriage

This Sunday (14th), Crown Prince Frederik became King of Denmark. His mother, Queen Margaret II, abdicated after 52 years as monarch. His Australian wife Mary is now queen consort of the Danes.

The two are the protagonists of gossip regarding Frederik’s alleged betrayal with the Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova. A magazine published photos of their meeting in Madrid, Spain, taken by a paparazzo. The woman said they are just good friends.

Mary seems unconvinced: she avoided making eye contact with her husband at public events. According to subject surveys, the new queen is more popular and well-liked than the new king. In May they will celebrate 20 years of marriage. They have four children.

The couple was in Brazil in September 2012. Visiting Lagoa Santa (MG), the European couple participated in the inauguration of the Peter Lund Museum, inspired by the path of the Danish naturalist, considered the father of paleontology and archeology in Brazil. In Bosnia and Herzegovina they were honored during a gala dinner.

Frederik and Mary left a good impression. Always available, smiling and interested in Brazil. Two years earlier, the queen’s other son, Prince Joachim, had also attracted sympathy when he visited Sao Paulo with his wife, Princess Mary.

Margrethe II has only been to Brazil once, in 1999, when she was received by President Fernando Henrique Cardoso in Brasilia and attended a screening of the film ‘Central do Brasil’, which earned Fernanda Montenegro an Oscar nomination.
