“Avril Lavigne died and was replaced by a lookalike”: this is one of the most famous conspiracy theories in the pop universe. The joke appeared on the web years ago and, from time to time, is still recovered by supporters, who vow to collect evidence. Canadian singer, now 39, has commented on the theory several times, but in a recent interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast she was quite direct: “Obviously it’s me. He is very stupid,” she said, bursting out laughing.

According to the theory, Avril died by suicide in the 2000s, having been replaced at her record company by a woman named Melissa. For the conspirators, her managers did not want to lose money, since Avril had a lot of success in 2002 with her album Let go, when he was just 17 years old. The arguments defended are that they noticed physical changes in Avril’s appearance, such as the shape of her nose and her voice.
