Local police reported that, during the fire, the minister and her children were unable to escape, becoming trapped in the flames that consumed the house. The husband of Lisa and two other relatives at the scene managed to survive, but were injured and taken to hospital.

The government of Trinidad and Tobago expressed its condolences in an official statement, underlining its pain for the loss of the minister and her children. “The Government of Trinidad and Tobago expresses its deepest condolences to the family, loved ones and constituents at this time and we keep them in our collective thoughts and prayers,” declared.
The Prime Minister Keith Rowley and other members of the government were at the scene of the accident as firefighters worked to douse the flames. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the fire.
