A father's diet prior to conception can influence the fat distribution and overall weight of his newborn baby, according to a study by Brazilian scientists.
Researchers found that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods by male parents was linked to increased infant birth weight, a higher weight relative to length, and thicker skinfolds around the thighs and pelvic region. Published in the medical journal Nutrition Research, the findings suggest that paternal food choices before a child is conceived may play a distinct role in fetal growth.
Study methodology and infant measurements
The investigation examined 43 couples comprising mothers, fathers, and their newborn infants. Pregnant women were initially recruited to participate in the project, with their male partners joining the study at a later stage.
During the research period, both parents completed two separate dietary interviews detailing all food and beverages consumed over the preceding 24 hours. Scientists used these dietary recalls to calculate the precise proportion of total daily energy derived from ultra-processed products.
Following delivery, medical researchers conducted detailed physical evaluations of each newborn. The measurements included birth weight, length at birth, circumferences of various body parts, skinfold thickness, and overall body composition metrics.
Specific fat accumulation patterns
Data analysis revealed that while paternal consumption of ultra-processed foods did not increase the infant's total fat mass, it led to targeted fat accumulation in specific areas of the body. Infants whose fathers ate larger amounts of highly processed items exhibited significantly thicker skinfold measurements across their hips and thighs.
The authors noted that the study demonstrates an observational correlation within the dataset rather than proven causation. Nevertheless, the results indicate that paternal nutrition prior to pregnancy may influence how fat tissue is deposited during fetal development.
Characteristics of ultra processed foods
Ultra-processed foods are defined as industrial formulations manufactured largely from refined or synthesized substances, including extracts, hydrolyzed proteins, added sugars, and trans fats. Combined with artificial additives, these products contain minimal whole ingredients and are engineered to be low cost, shelf stable, and hyper-palatable to encourage overconsumption.
