Florence Pugh will star as Cathy Ames in a new seven-episode Netflix adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden, releasing on October 1.

All seven episodes of the limited series will be available on the streaming platform from its launch day.

Pugh takes on the role of Cathy Ames, described as one of the most complex and enigmatic characters in American literature. The production expands on Steinbeck's original text to follow multiple generations of two families.

Adaptation of the Steinbeck classic novel

Created, written, and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, the series expands the narrative to follow the lives of the Trask and Hamilton families. Set in the period spanning from the American Civil War to World War I, the drama explores fundamental themes of good and evil, family ties, and the consequences of human choices.

Kazan said that she chose to widen the scope of the story for the screen while maintaining that every new element included in the series has at least one root in Steinbeck's original text.

The source novel, published in 1952 by John Steinbeck, is widely regarded as one of the author's most ambitious works. Steinbeck, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, set the epic story in California's Salinas Valley, drawing thematic parallels to biblical narratives about moral responsibility and free will.

Character focus and complete cast list

Cathy Ames serves as one of the central figures in the new adaptation. Although the character retains her status as a manipulative and enigmatic presence, Kazan explained that the series seeks to delve deeper into her backstory to reveal the human being behind that exterior.

The ensemble cast features Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask. Hoon Lee portrays Lee, while Ciarán Hinds plays Samuel Hamilton and Martha Plimpton appears as Faye. The younger generation of the Trask family includes Joseph Zada as Cal Trask and Joe Anders as Aron Trask.

Pugh's casting follows a series of high-profile film roles across diverse genres. The actress recently appeared as a superhero in Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* and other Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Her previous work includes the lead role in the 2019 horror film Midsommar and an Oscar-nominated performance as Amy March in Greta Gerwig's 2019 film adaptation of Little Women, where she wore period costumes featuring long skirts and elaborate headpieces.

Directorial team and production crew

Direction of the seven episodes is split between two filmmakers. Australian director Garth Davis, known for directing the feature films Lion and Mary Magdalene, directed the first four episodes of the series.

French filmmaker Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed the remaining three episodes. Screenwriter Jeb Stuart serves as executive producer and shares co-showrunner responsibilities alongside Kazan.
