Fra' Max Rumney Resigns as Grand Prior of Knights of Malta

Fra' Max Rumney has abruptly resigned from his role as the 58th Grand Prior of England for the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

The Knights of Malta, the oldest chivalric order in the Roman Catholic Church, fuses social standing with spirituality. Past presidents of the order include the 5th Earl of Gainsborough and Prince Rupert Loewenstein, who served as financial adviser to the Rolling Stones. The hierarchy of the Order of Malta in Great Britain is headed by knights who have made vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, known as Knights of Justice.

Fra' Max Rumney, 58, was appointed in 2022, when the Catholic Herald welcomed the "tall, gentle" figure, noting that "there are few grander titles than the Grand Prior of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta" and almost certainly none with "more fabulous regalia." The prefix Fra' comes from the Italian word frate, meaning brother. Rumney is also a member of the £1,700-a-year Travellers' Club.

Philippa Leslie, director of communications for the Order of Malta, confirmed his departure. She said that the Order of Malta in Great Britain has communicated to its members that Fra' Max Rumney stepped down from the role of Grand Prior for health and personal reasons. She added that he indicated this in a formal letter to the Grand Master of the Order, who accepted his resignation.

At the request of the Grand Commander, immediate religious superior of Fra' Max, the Procurator of the Grand Priory of England will work with Fra' Max to decide his future in the Order of Malta and the religious life. A friend described Fra' Max as "a very gentle soul, a charming man" and stated that his departure has "caused quite a furore." Rumney did not respond to calls following his departure.

Samantha Morton Movie Rejections

Odyssey star Samantha Morton revealed she turned down a string of Hollywood films, including a role in the X-Men franchise in the early 2000s, because she found their older-man, younger-woman romances implausible. The 49-year-old actress also refused films that paired male stars with much younger actresses.

The Nottingham-born star recalled her early career while living in Manhattan in her early 20s. Morton said, "There was a time in my career, when I was in my early 20s, living in Manhattan, and the scripts would arrive. I would question some of those movies today: should they have been made? And I questioned it then." She added, "It wasn't just turning down X-Men, because I don't know what X-Men is. I read the script and I didn't understand it."

Lily James and Billie Piper Holiday

Best friends Lily James and Billie Piper reunited for a holiday in Spain. James, 37, who starred in Mamma Mia! 2 and appeared in Piper's 2019 film directorial debut, Rare Beasts, shared a photo on social media showing the pair enjoying lunch at a restaurant.

The photograph showed a packet of cigarettes on the table. Piper, 43, who is an actress and film-maker, has tried to quit smoking various times over the years after trying her first cigarette at age 15 while sharing a dressing room with the Spice Girls on Top of the Pops.

Sir Tom Jones London Performance

Sir Tom Jones told audience members at the Palace Bowl Presents event in London that he was just getting started at age 86. He referenced attending the 93rd birthday celebration of Texan country star Willie Nelson in Los Angeles.

Cambridge university¿s new chancellor, Lord Smith, was seen in the alumni magazine wearing comically oversized shirtsleeves which reach down to his knuckles

Jones said, "I went to LA to celebrate Willie Nelson's birthday. Willie is in his 90s and he's still singing, and I'm only 86. I thought to myself, 'He's in his 90s, so I've got something to look forward to.'"

Sian Clifford Mockumentary Screening

Fleabag star Sian Clifford stated at a screening at the BFI Southbank in London that she has become camera-shy. The 44-year-old actress plays Lady Isabella, a fame-hungry aristocrat who dupes a struggling, opportunist director to film her in the mockumentary film The Lady.

Clifford contrasted her personality with her role, saying, "I am the opposite of Lady Isabella. I would rather hide from everything. But definitely a camera. It's something I have been told by every director I have ever worked with that I physically turn away from the camera. It is becoming a problem."

Lord Smith Cambridge Magazine Photograph

Cambridge University alumni facing the scandal surrounding Professor Jason Arday, who resigned following claims of plagiarism, were intrigued by a photograph of the university's new chancellor, Lord Smith.
