Popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has featured in resurfaced online footage from a 1997 anti-drug educational film produced by the Hellenic Army during his military service. The film, titled The Winner, was created by the General Staff of the Army to inform young conscripts about the dangers of substance abuse.
Mazonakis made his appearance in the production while serving his mandatory military duty, performing music in uniform for fellow soldiers rather than playing a main acting role in the storyline.
The singer enlisted in the armed forces in 1996 and was later transferred to the city of Sparta for retraining at the Supply and Transportation Training Center, known as KEEM. During his time in service, he earned the rank of sergeant.
In 1997, the same year the film was produced, Mazonakis released his hit song Child of the Night, which gave significant momentum to his recording career. Over his subsequent career, Mazonakis built a reputation as one of the prominent figures in modern Greek popular music.
Military Service and Musical Appearance
In The Winner, Mazonakis appears wearing his military uniform and is featured singing with a guitar in front of enlisted troops. His participation was tied to the musical element of the film, capturing him within the daily reality of military life.
Educational productions by the Hellenic Army General Staff were designed to be screened for conscripts to raise awareness about health risks and the dangers of narcotics. The General Staff of the Army, abbreviated as GES, serves as the executive command of the Hellenic Army.

Several other notable public figures who were fulfilling their military obligations at the time also participated in the production. The cast featured actors Nikos Psarras, Thanasis Efthymiadis, and Markos Seferlis, alongside television presenter Antonis Kanakis.
Actor Nikos Psarras has spoken publicly about that period and their shared participation in the movie. Psarras explained that filming took place toward the end of their military service.
Psarras said that during their final month, when they should have been on discharge leave, he, Efthymiadis, Kanakis, and Seferlis were instead working on the film for the army 7th staff directorate.
He also noted that the script and direction for The Winner were provided by Filippos Fylaktos. The participants later became well-known names in Greek theater, comedy, and broadcasting.
Resurfaced Educational Production
Almost three decades after the film was made, footage from the production has returned to the internet. The rediscovery of the clip has drawn attention primarily because it features individuals who later achieved widespread public recognition.
Among those captured in the old General Staff of the Army production is Mazonakis, recorded at a time when he was balancing his military duties with the early years of his artistic career.
