Gwyneth Paltrow is facing widespread backlash over reports she is set to host a private off-the-record dinner for OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman at her Hamptons home.
Invites for the rumored gathering will allegedly be sent out this week, according to Puck News, which also published a photo of the purported invitation.

"Gwyneth Paltrow invites you to a private, off-the-record al fresco dinner at her home in honor of Sam Altman," the alleged invitation reads, listing an RSVP email address affiliated with Paltrow's wellness company Goop.
According to the invite, the event is scheduled to take place at the home of the 53-year-old actress on August 29, with cocktails starting at 6:00pm followed by dinner. Representatives for Paltrow and Altman, 41, have been reached out to by the Daily Mail for comment.

Paltrow, who won an Academy Award for her role in Shakespeare in Love, launched her lifestyle and wellness brand Goop in 2008. Altman is the chief executive officer of OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind the ChatGPT chatbot. The Hamptons, a group of seaside communities on Long Island in New York, is a high-profile summer destination for business leaders and celebrities.
Social media reaction to the Hamptons invite
The reported invitation quickly went viral on Wednesday, triggering a wave of criticism across social media platforms. One commentator on X compared the rumored event to "an episode of black mirror," referencing the sci-fi television series focused on technology and society.
On Threads, another user criticized the contrast between the event and Paltrow's brand image, writing: "Really drives home the fact that her organic, chemical-free, homemade food aesthetic was always about being elitist first and foremost. Sam Altman is literally poisoning the water, babe."
Another commenter addressed her perceived political standing, adding: "I don't think she really cares how she's perceived politically. She's part of the 'billionaire class' and she enjoys it."

A third user questioned her cultural awareness, asking: "Unless I'm forgetting someone, is Gwyneth at this point the most out of touch celebrity?"
Several social media users questioned the core purpose of the party, with one writing, "'In honor of Sam Altman' ??? Why??" Another user remarked: "There is something funny to me about an off-the-record dinner with a guy who basically lives on twitter."

Other commentators wondered whether the invitation itself was generated using artificial intelligence technology. One written post stated: "this looks very ai generated and not very impressive or tasteful imo." Another user joked, "AI fresco or Al fresco?" while a third noted, "Rsvping to goop is sending me."
Public skepticism over artificial intelligence
The pushback against the rumored event comes amid growing public skepticism toward technology giants and artificial intelligence firms like OpenAI, where Altman serves as chief executive.

A survey conducted by CNBC and Generation Labs among 1,088 Americans found that 45 percent of adults under the age of 35 view artificial intelligence as a threat to their future careers.
The same poll revealed that a majority of respondents distrust the corporate leaders of major companies currently investing in artificial intelligence.

Goop partnership and embrace of AI
Despite public skepticism surrounding artificial intelligence, Paltrow has increasingly incorporated the technology into her personal and professional endeavors.
Earlier this year, her business Goop announced an official AI partnership with performance marketing platform Adora.

Speaking with tech journalist Kara Swisher on her Goop podcast earlier this year, Paltrow stated that she engages with AI "all the time," adding: "I find it incredibly useful."
In recent months, Paltrow has dedicated several podcast episodes to artificial intelligence topics, including "The Future of AI In Health" and "AI and Modern Dating."

In a 2025 video for Goop, Paltrow explained that she occasionally relies on AI software for cooking ideas. "Lately, I've been asking various AI platforms for help with that kind of thing. And it's incredible the recipes you get. You could put in what I just said but ask them for an exact recipe and you'll get something great," she said.
In 2024, Paltrow also introduced an AI-powered meditation app that unconventionally encourages users to keep their eyes open during sessions.

Company layoffs and pivot to AI workflow
Paltrow's enthusiasm for technology has coincided with significant operational changes at her lifestyle company. In May, Goop cut staff while announcing a "pivot to AI," just 18 months after executing previous massive layoffs.
In late 2024, Paltrow's wellness brand carried out two separate rounds of job cuts within two months, eliminating roughly 50 positions.

Earlier this year, Goop laid off approximately 20 additional employees, with Puck reporting that executives justified the decisions through the rationale of "profitability and AI."
The staff reductions were reportedly "justified via pivot to AI workflow," according to the tip line on Emily Sundberg's Feed Me Substack newsletter.

Previous controversy over Israeli development campaign
The social media pushback over the dinner invite follows another recent controversy involving Paltrow in June, when she starred in a campaign for a luxury residential real estate development in Israel.
Paltrow's collaboration with Israeli real estate group Aviv Melisron divided online opinion, with several critics accusing her of supporting the country's military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon.

One user on X wrote: "Gwyneth Paltrow promotes $10M penthouses in Herzliya while Gaza burns and Lebanon bleeds," while another user accused the actress of being "consciously uncoupled from morality." Herzliya is an affluent coastal city located north of Tel Aviv.
Conversely, other social media users defended Paltrow, praising her for expressing pride in her Jewish heritage and supporting Israel following a global rise in antisemitism after the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas.

Paltrow has previously spoken publicly about her Jewish background and voiced support for Israeli hostages taken into Gaza during the attacks.
The October 7 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of dozens of hostages, triggering a major regional conflict.
Israel's retaliatory military campaign in Gaza killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and displaced most of the enclave's population of approximately two million people, often multiple times, prior to a fragile ceasefire in October. Its conflict with Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon killed roughly 3,500 people and displaced more than 1.2 million.
Both military operations drew allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity, which Israel has adamantly denied.
