Cinematographer Adriano Goldman has revealed new details about the upcoming Harry Potter television series, describing how the Muggle world and the wizarding world will look visually distinct on screen. Goldman said Muggles, meaning ordinary people without magical abilities, will be shown in muted tones, while everything connected to wizards will appear brighter and warmer.
Post-production on the first episode is underway, and Goldman said most of it will use muted colors because Hogwarts does not appear until the end of the episode. The series will include more characters than the films, since the longer format allows the show to cover everyone mentioned in the books, including the poltergeist Peeves, who did not appear in the movies.
Seven seasons planned
The first season, premiering in December this year, adapts "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." Seven seasons are planned in total, matching the number of novels.
Some fans have voiced concern about whether the show can match the visual spectacle of the films. Goldman said the series has plenty of dramatic scenes but will reveal them gradually, with Harry's first Quidditch match not shown until the seventh episode, the season's second-to-last.
Essiedu cast amid backlash
Actor Paapa Essiedu, cast as Severus Snape, has reportedly received threats from people who object to a Black actor playing the role. Increased security was reportedly present on set during his scenes. The show's first trailer, released several months ago, has been viewed hundreds of millions of times.
