Actress Hayden Panettiere has died at age 36 following a suspected overdose at a loft apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, just three months after reflecting publicly on her personal legacy.
Detectives with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office confirmed they responded on Sunday afternoon to a 911 call from an acquaintance who found the star unresponsive. Panettiere suffered cardiac arrest after arriving in Greenville a day earlier with her on-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson.
Emergency responders found Narcan, a nasal spray used to reverse opioid overdoses, on a mattress inside the apartment, according to law enforcement sources cited by TMZ. The Sheriff's Office confirmed that an autopsy has been completed and found no signs of physical trauma on her body.
Representatives for the former child star announced her passing on Sunday, describing her as "an incredible light and a force of nature." In a public statement, her team said: "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden."
Comments on legacy and mental health
Her death comes three months after she made poignant comments about her life and career during a promotional event on May 26. Speaking about her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere reflected on her desire to leave a positive impact.
"I can hopefully leave the world a better place than I found it," Panettiere told fans at the event. She shared that people both inside and outside the entertainment industry had approached her to discuss their own mental health after reading her work.
Panettiere recalled fans telling her that her openness gave them courage to seek help and saved their lives. "And I was like, this is worth it... the strength is in our vulnerability," she stated at the time.
Memoir and family struggles
Released in May, This Is Me: A Reckoning detailed her toxic experiences in Hollywood alongside her struggles with grief, addiction, and postpartum depression. In the book, she wrote about her ongoing personal growth and commitment to self-improvement.
"I never want to stop evolving and changing for the better, and I'll forever be a work in progress," she wrote. She added that life in the public eye taught her that growth continues "until the moment you take your last breath."
The memoir also addressed the death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died from an enlarged heart in 2023 at age 28. Panettiere called his passing "the heartbreak of my life," while emphasizing that she remained "an optimist to the core" who refused to be defined by tragedy.

In the months leading up to her death, Panettiere grappled with a mysterious back injury that left her struggling to walk independently and requiring crutches for mobility.
