The mid-August schedule opens on Monday, August 17, with the premiere of the comic book mystery series Lanterns on HBO Max, followed by major franchise returns and international releases later in the week.
Lanterns follows intergalactic officers John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they become entangled in a dark mystery in the heart of the United States. The series brings two of DC Comics' most prominent Green Lantern heroes into a grounded investigation on Earth.
Green Lantern is a long-running superhero franchise from DC Comics focused on members of an intergalactic police force tasked with keeping peace across the cosmos. HBO Max, the streaming platform owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, serves as the home for major DC Universe television productions.
Netflix dramas and final adventures
Netflix leads its weekly additions on Thursday, August 20, with the premiere of Outer Banks season five. In this fifth installment, the main characters, known as the Pogues, prepare for their ultimate final adventure as they look to conclude their story following the events of the season four finale.
Outer Banks is an American action-adventure teen drama that debuted in 2020, focusing on the conflict between working-class and wealthy teenagers in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina. The show has become one of Netflix's most popular youth-oriented series since its premiere.
Also arriving on Netflix on August 20 is S&X, a new Japanese drama series adapted from the manga created by Tada Kisei. The platform will additionally add the drama series The Capture and the romance title Love, Love, Wedding on Friday, August 21.
Manga refers to comic books and graphic novels produced in Japan, a medium that has increasingly served as a major source for international television adaptations. Netflix is a global subscription streaming service that produces and distributes content in numerous languages across worldwide markets.
Comedy travels and platform exclusives
HBO Max expands its comedy lineup on Saturday, August 22, with the third season of Conan O'Brien Must Go. The travel series follows the former television host as he immerses himself in local cultures and connects with international fans he previously met through his podcast.
Viewers can already stream the show's Spain episode, which features O'Brien harvesting olives with his producer Jordan Schlansky, testing a flight simulator, and exploring Madrid alongside Spanish actor Javier Bardem.
Conan O'Brien is a veteran American late-night comedian who hosted national talk shows for nearly three decades before launching his podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend. Javier Bardem is an Academy Award-winning Spanish actor known for his roles in major Hollywood films and European cinema.
Other streaming services are also debuting new titles throughout the week. Filmin releases the series The Gallows on Tuesday, August 18, while Movistar Plus+ premieres the second season of Los Hardcare on Thursday, August 20. Apple TV+ adds the fifth season of Stillwater alongside the sports documentary UConn Huskies: The Dynasty on Friday, August 21.
Filmin is a Spanish subscription video service specializing in independent cinema, while Movistar Plus+ is the digital television platform operated by Spanish telecommunications provider Telefonica. Apple TV+ is the streaming video service operated by Apple Inc.
