High Potential will return for a third season in early 2027, ABC has confirmed, continuing the comedy crime drama about a single mother whose genius IQ helps the Los Angeles police solve their toughest cases. The show's second season ended on a cliffhanger, with one of its lead characters left seriously wounded.
An exact premiere date has not been announced. The network has said only that the new season is expected in early 2027, without specifying a month.
Why the wait
Season two of High Potential wrapped in April 2026, a month after ABC officially renewed the series for a third run. Reports had initially suggested the new season could arrive as early as September 2026, since both the first and second seasons premiered that month a year apart. In May 2026, however, ABC told fans they would need to wait longer.
The delay does come with one upside. Season one was interrupted by a hiatus of almost two months, and season two's midseason break ran longer than two months. Because season three is being held until 2027, its broadcast is expected to run without a similar gap.
The exact episode count has not been confirmed either, though it is expected to match season two's total of 18 episodes. The show will again air on ABC and stream on Hulu. No trailer has been released yet, but cast members have already shared the first behind-the-scenes photos from the set.
The story so far
High Potential follows Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), who lives in Los Angeles, raises three children alone and works as a cleaner at a police station. Her IQ of 160, well above the average range of 85 to 115, and her sharp eye for detail come to the department's attention after she helps solve a kidnapping case. She is then offered a job as a consultant to the Major Crimes division.
Morgan agrees on one condition: that police help her track down Roman Sinquiera, the father of her eldest daughter, who disappeared without a trace fifteen years earlier. The series follows a classic procedural format, with each episode built around a new case, as Morgan works alongside her partner, Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), for whom she gradually develops feelings.
By the end of season one, Morgan discovered that Roman was alive and had been working as an FBI informant since his disappearance. Season two revealed further complications, showing that Roman had worked with a corrupt intelligence officer named Lila Flynn and may have been connected to her death. During the investigation, Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey), who was also pursuing the case and has feelings for Morgan, was stabbed. His fate is expected to be addressed in season three.
Cast for season three
The full cast for the new season has not yet been announced, but Kaitlin Olson, known for playing Dee Reynolds in the long-running sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is confirmed to return as Morgan Gillory. Other familiar faces from the earlier seasons are also expected back, including Daniel Sunjata as Detective Adam Karadec, Deniz Akdeniz as junior investigator Lev "Oz" Ozdil, Javicia Leslie as Daphne Forrester, Judy Reyes as Selena Soto, who heads the Major Crimes division, Matthew Lamb as Morgan's intellectually gifted son Elliot, and Amirah J as Ava, Morgan's teenage daughter from her first marriage.
Steve Howey, however, may not return. He joined the cast at the start of season two, and his character, Captain Nick Wagner, was seriously wounded eight episodes later. Howey's contract was reportedly for one year and expired at the end of the season, with no news yet of a renewal. That has led media outlets to speculate Wagner will not be a central figure in season three, though some hold out hope for guest appearances. None of this has been officially confirmed.
Behind the camera
ABC renewed High Potential for a third season in March 2026. At the same time, it was confirmed that Todd Harthan, showrunner for the first two seasons, would not return, having left the project to focus on a new series called Eragon for Disney+.
Taking over as showrunners are sisters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, previously showrunners on Poker Face who have also written for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits and Fringe. Among their recent work is a script for Scream 8. The Zuckerman sisters said they were looking forward to diving into Morgan Gillory's brilliant, high-energy mind and crafting mysteries worthy of her intelligence.
The rest of the core production team remains unchanged. The original writing staff continues under series creator Drew Goddard, alongside executive producers Sarah Esberg and Andrea Massarow. Filming on the third season began in mid-August 2026.
