Disney-backed streaming service Hulu has canceled the ensemble comedy series No Aptos Para El Trabajo after a single nine-episode season.
The decision leaves the story on an open ending and leaves the future of its five main characters unresolved following its premiere in June 2026.
Created by Mindy Kaling and showrun by Charlie Grandy, the workplace sitcom revived the classic group comedy format for a new generation of twenty-somethings in New York. The series followed five young professionals obsessed with their careers as they attempted to build personal lives in Murray Hill, a popular residential neighborhood in Manhattan.
Despite earning critical comparisons to established television hits such as Friends, How I Met Your Mother, The Mindy Project, and The Sex Lives of College Girls, the praise was not enough to secure a second season commitment from Hulu.
Cast and production background
The series featured a central ensemble starring Ella Hunt as AJ, Avantika Vandanapu as Abby, Will Angus as Davis, Jack Martin as Josh, and Nicholas Duvernay as Kel. Actor Jay Ellis portrayed Bill, a key character in AJ's workplace duties and romantic storyline.
The main cast was joined by several high-profile recurring guest stars throughout the first season, including Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, Ego Nwodim, and Constance Wu.
Before the show's premiere, Duvernay explained that the production team sought from the beginning to capture a group comedy vibe similar to Friends, but with a modern lens centered on young people attempting to establish their careers in New York City.
Kaling, who rose to prominence playing Kelly Kapoor on NBC's comedy series The Office while also serving as a writer on the show, co-created the series alongside Grandy. The project was produced by Warner Bros. Television, a major American studio that creates content for television networks and streaming platforms.
Shopping for a new platform home
The cancellation by Hulu does not necessarily mean the series is permanently ended. Studio producer Warner Bros. Television confirmed that it intends to search for a new home for the series if another streaming platform or broadcast network expresses interest.
The studio is actively looking for new distribution options, with subscription platform HBO Max identified as a prospective candidate to acquire the series.
Unresolved storylines and cliffhangers
The single-season run leaves several key story arcs unresolved, most notably a central romantic triangle involving AJ, Davis, and Josh.
In the season finale, AJ discovers that Bill ended their relationship in order to reunite with his former partner. Shortly after learning the news, AJ is visited by Davis, who was just fired after getting into a physical confrontation with his boss over unfair workplace treatment.
Davis confesses to AJ that he has romantic feelings for her, leading AJ to kiss him. Josh arrives moments later and witnesses the kiss, leaving the relationship dynamic between all three characters unresolved.
Individual career storylines were also left hanging at the end of the season. Davis is forced to search for new employment following his termination, while AJ must determine the next steps for her professional future. Simultaneously, characters Abby and Kel remain caught up in their own romantic complications.
Warner Bros. Television had already mapped out multiple storylines for a potential second season, which the studio now aims to pitch to alternative outlets.
