Joan Manuel Serrat escapes public life by retreating to Viana, a town of roughly 4,000 people in Navarra near the La Rioja border, where friends and neighbours know him simply as Juanito.
The singer-songwriter has owned a home in the declared Historic-Artistic town for decades. Locals say it is not unusual to find him playing cards in a village bar or walking the surrounding area with his wife.
One resident said he is just Juanito there, the neighbour who goes out for bread or has a glass of wine at the bar without anyone bothering him.
Away from Viana, Serrat has recently become a great-grandfather twice over. His granddaughter Luna Serrat, daughter of his eldest son Manuel, gave birth to twin girls with her husband, footballer Dani Ceballos. Luna wrote on Instagram that the love they had imagined turned out to be an understatement.
