British chef James Shadbolt lost over 25 kilograms in six months after his stepfather suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in December 2023. Most excess weight stems from poor nutrition and lack of activity, depending on calorie intake, quality, and timing. The 40-year-old changed his approach to food without giving up favorite dishes after his stepfather collapsed in the kitchen.
The stepfather later fully recovered, but the incident served as a wake-up call. James recalled that his initial reaction was panic and that the event remained a blur, with no time to process what was happening. Realizing his health affected his wife and children, James sought a lifestyle change with his wife's help.
James joined MAN v FAT, a football league for overweight men aiming to lose weight. He completed weekly weigh-ins, played football, and listened to podcasts by fitness trainer Eric Roberts to learn about nutrition and fat loss.
Diet changes and physical results
Working as a chef surrounded by food every day, James controlled portion sizes and counted calories while still eating burgers and pizza. James said portion weighing helped him see how much he actually ate and where to make better choices. He noted that achieving results did not require perfection, but rather consistent smart decisions compatible with work and family life.
After significant initial weight loss, James added strength training with a coach, ultimately losing over 25 kg in six months. According to The Mirror, James now feels fitter and stronger than in his twenties, showing improved resting heart rate, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. James said his greatest achievement was the freedom and confidence to run, play football, and ride bikes with his children rather than watching from the sidelines.
