John Travolta's iconic white three-piece tuxedo from the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever will be auctioned at the end of August by auction house Propstore.
The sale is scheduled to take place late in the month alongside hundreds of other notable items from film and television history.
Travolta became a cultural icon of an era discovering disco music through his portrayal of protagonist Tony Manero. Directed by John Badham, the movie featured music by the Bee Gees and turned dance floors into a major cultural attraction.
Tuxedo details and provenance
The suit is estimated to be worth between $200,000 and $400,000, which is approximately 170,000 to 350,000 euros. It was previously acquired by Patrizia von Brandenstein, the costume designer for the film.
Manufactured by Leading Male, the outfit includes a white jacket with broad satin-lined lapels, a matching vest, and flared trousers made from the same fabric.
In blue ink on the jacket lining, Travolta wrote a message to film critic Gene Siskel proposing a toast to a classic and signing as his friend. Siskel acquired the suit in 1979 and later sold it at Christie's in June 1995.
Auction items and schedule
The tuxedo is one of the centerpiece items among more than 1,400 lots featured in the sale. Other featured items include an original Mr. Spock costume from Star Trek, Jon Snow's dagger from Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter's wand.
The auction also includes memorabilia from major franchises such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future.
The event will run over four days. Propstore will dedicate the first three days to film and television series archives, reserving the final day for more than 300 lots of autographs and memorabilia.
Organizers expect the four-day auction to draw interest from collectors and film fans around the world.
