The podcast comes to life

Hamm portrays Fred Heckman, a popular radio journalist in Indianapolis who becomes thrust into a dangerous standoff in 1977. The story is based on a real hostage crisis that gripped the country for 63 hours.

Giovanni Ribisi stars alongside Hamm as hostage taker Tony Kiritsis. Kiritsis demands to be interviewed live on Heckman's radio program while holding businessman Dick Hall, played by Kristoffer Polaha, at gunpoint.

Real Crisis on the Airwaves

The newly released official trailer highlights the central dilemma facing Heckman and his broadcasting team. Granting a kidnapper live access to the airwaves threatens to transform a perilous crisis into a public spectacle watched by thousands of listeners.

Despite the immense risks, the trailer shows Heckman ultimately agreeing to speak with Kiritsis live on air. As the broadcast unfolds, tension escalates and the standoff threatens to end in severe violence.

Hamm is already familiar with the historical material. The actor previously starred as Fred Heckman in the 2022 scripted podcast of American Hostage before returning to headline this screen adaptation. The television series is based on the first season of that narrative audio show.

Cast and Production Team

The ensemble cast features William Jackson Harper as Ben Hairston, Mireille Enos as Barbara Heckman, Jonathan Tucker as FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally, and Kat Cunning as Ibby Hall.

American Hostage was created by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers. Ryan is best known as the creator of acclaimed television series including The Shield, while Myers has written and produced for major television dramas.

Before its streaming premiere, American Hostage will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Following its festival debut, the series will launch worldwide on MGM+ on September 20.

Hamm Shifts Platforms

The new project marks a major platform shift for Hamm, who has recently worked extensively with Apple TV+. Hamm stars in the network drama series The Morning Show and headlines Your Friends and Neighbors, which has already been renewed for a third season.

The American actor first achieved global recognition for his portrayal of advertising executive Don Draper in the hit drama series Mad Men. He has since appeared in major feature films, including the 2022 box office blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.

Colleagues and industry acquaintances frequently describe Hamm as a highly skilled actor and an accessible, friendly personality off camera.
