Sony Pictures Entertainment has released the first trailer for "Jumanji: Open World," the fifth and final installment in the long-running adventure action comedy franchise.
The film reunites Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan as the video game avatars from "Jumanji," but this time reverses the usual setup. Instead of people being pulled into the game, their game characters are transported into the real world on the eve of Christmas.
According to the studio, the people of the real world must find a way to send the game's heroes, along with the various dangerous creatures that come with them, back to their own world, while also closing the wormhole connecting the two worlds.
Also returning to their roles from the earlier films are Nick Jonas, Alex Wolff, Danny DeVito and Awkwafina.
Director and release dates
As with the previous two entries, "Jumanji: Open World" was directed by Jake Kasdan, who also helmed "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" and "Jumanji: The Next Level."
The film opens in worldwide cinemas on December 25, 2026. In Ukraine, it will begin screening from December 24 under the title "Jumanji: Velyka Vtecha" ("Jumanji: The Great Escape").
The Jumanji franchise so far
The original "Jumanji" was based on Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 children's book of the same name and was released in 1995. The franchise's premise sees people from the real world pulled into a board game called Jumanji, set in a jungle inhabited by mysterious creatures, which they must complete in order to escape.
The first film starred comedian Robin Williams and a young Kirsten Dunst and was directed by Joe Johnston. It received mixed reviews from critics but was a box office success.
A spin-off, "Zathura: A Space Adventure," followed in 2005, based on another Van Allsburg book published in 2002. Although the two source books are narratively connected, the films are separate stories; in "Zathura," a board game transports its young players into outer space instead of a jungle. The film starred a young Josh Hutcherson and Kristen Stewart and was directed by Jon Favreau. It was praised by critics but did not recoup its budget at the box office.
Sony rebooted the franchise in 2017 with "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," starring Johnson, Black, Hart and Gillan, with all four reprising their roles in the 2019 sequel "Jumanji: The Next Level." Both films were well received by critics and became box office hits, together grossing nearly $2 billion worldwide.
