Australian pop star Kate Ceberano has broken her silence after her disgraced former manager Ralph Carr was jailed for up to six years for raping a woman at his Melbourne West home.
Carr, 66, who was prosecuted under his full name Ralph Carnovale-Carr, appeared at the Melbourne County Court via videolink from the Melbourne Assessment Prison, where Judge Frank Gucciardo sentenced him to a maximum of six years in prison with a minimum non-parole period of four years.
Speaking to the Herald Sun on Sunday, 59-year-old Ceberano warned that Carr's criminal actions were not isolated incidents within the entertainment industry.
"I think there's a very malevolent underworld that's attached to some people in music management," Ceberano said. She added: "When you have a person who's been a custodian for hardworking artists, and you suddenly find out his private life is not honourable, it's disgusting. His actions are disgusting. They're despicable."
Ceberano noted that many people in the industry had assumed Carr was a reputable figure due to his prominent reputation. "Because of his social standing and connections, people assumed he was a good person," she said. "And yet we discover this underworld of terrible things."
Industry Reaction and Management Split
Ceberano parted ways professionally with Carr in 2018. She is now managed by her husband, Lee Rogers.
The singer revealed that she has discussed Carr's conviction and imprisonment with other high-profile former clients, including singer Vanessa Amorosi and Carr's ex-wife, pop star Tina Arena.
"They've been discreet about it," Ceberano said of her conversations with Amorosi and Arena. "We don't want to be associated with him."
Ceberano is one of Australia's most prominent musical performers, having built a career spanning four decades in pop, jazz, and musical theatre. Arena and Amorosi are likewise among the country's most successful female recording artists. Melbourne, the capital of Victoria where the offenses took place, serves as the hub of Australia's live music and entertainment management sector.
Details of the Assault and Conviction
A jury found Carr guilty of raping a woman multiple times during the early hours of March 24, 2023. The attack occurred at his Melbourne West warehouse residence after the victim became emotional while discussing a relationship breakup.
Carr was convicted on two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. Known throughout his career for a flamboyant dress sense and wearing a wig, Carr appeared on videolink for his August sentencing bald, clean-shaven, and dressed in standard prison greens.
Prior to sentencing, Carr had sought an extraordinary stay of sentence. A successful application would have allowed his legal team to apply for bail and seek temporary release while preparing an appeal.
Defense barrister Dermot Dann KC, a senior silk representing Carr, urged the court to grant the stay. Dann argued that the jury's guilty verdicts represented the "most obvious miscarriage of justice" he had witnessed in over 30 years of legal practice. "For someone who maintains innocence, this is a terrible, terrible situation," Dann told the court.
Judge Denounces Appalling Abuse of Trust
Judge Frank Gucciardo firmly rejected the stay application before handing down the prison sentence, denouncing Carr's actions as grave and predatory.
"Your conduct was appalling," Judge Gucciardo told Carr. "You took advantage of her at a point in time when she was not only intoxicated but vulnerable and in need of comfort and at a point in which she looked to you for care and support. It was at that point, instead you chose to abuse that trust in the most abhorrent manner."
The court heard that Carr failed to stop his sexual assault despite continuous pleas from the victim stating she did not want to engage in sexual activity. Moments after the jury delivered its guilty verdicts, Carr self-harmed by striking his head against a courtroom wall.
Carr was long established as an influential figure across Australian show business and sports talent management. He gained widespread public visibility during his past marriage to Australian singer Tina Arena.

During legal proceedings, multiple family members and long-time associates submitted character references on Carr's behalf. Following the sentencing, a close friend disclosed to the Daily Mail that Carr will almost certainly lodge a formal appeal against his rape convictions.
