Katherine Jones, a 36-year-old woman from Liverpool, decided to proceed with her lavish wedding celebrations in Italy despite her fiancé dumping her one week before.
The couple had been together for six and a half years following a proposal in Thailand. They had planned to marry in early August at an 18th-century estate in Tuscany, complete with its own chapel and swimming pool.
Just seven days before the ceremony, her partner abruptly ended the engagement without offering any clear explanation. Following discussions with her family, Jones resolved to go ahead with the event she had spent months planning.
Jones told Swiss publication 20 Minuten that none of the event expenses were refundable. Furthermore, all of her invited guests had already booked their flights to Italy.
Wedding Festivities in Tuscany
Tuscany is a region in central Italy renowned for its rolling hills, olive groves, and historic countryside villas. Rather than wearing her planned wedding gown, Jones chose to wear an alternative dress originally selected for the evening reception.
The celebration continued with most of the original schedule intact. Her sisters delivered speeches, guests sat at a dinner table styled after the 2013 Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street, and the night ended with a dance party.
The bride documented the event on the video-sharing platform TikTok under the username @kathjay89. Her most widely viewed clip featured a text overlay stating that she had dodged a divorce, drawing widespread support from commentators online.
Capri Honeymoon and Financial Settlements
Jones admitted that while she considered the celebration a success, the experience was emotional and included crying between moments of laughter. The morning after the party proved particularly challenging when guests returned home, leaving her with her mother and sisters.
Rather than canceling her post-wedding trip, Jones asked her mother to join her on the journey to Capri and Salerno in southern Italy. Capri is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea known for its rugged landscape, while Salerno is a coastal port city situated in the Campania region. She dubbed the updated holiday a mummymoon instead of a traditional honeymoon.
Jones plans to sell both her engagement ring and her wedding dress to recover funds. However, she intends to keep her wedding band, explaining that she does not associate the piece of jewelry with her ex-fiancé.
Her former partner has agreed to cover half of the total wedding costs. Those payments will be finalized once the former couple completes the sale of their shared home in England.
