Radio presenter Kyle Sandilands unleashed a live 15-minute tirade against his production team after a technical glitch disrupted Monday's episode of his new subscription show.
The 55-year-old broadcaster subjected staff members on Kyle Sandilands Live to an intense on-air interrogation, berating their physical appearance and questioning their professionalism when a video failed to play on his studio monitor.
Most of Sandilands' anger was directed at his executive producer, Jaimee Blazquez, who is nicknamed Mayo. Blazquez previously worked alongside him on the Kyle and Jackie O Show and is accustomed to his studio antics, but she appeared flustered and frustrated as Sandilands relentlessly demanded she name the staff member responsible for the error.
Sandilands opened his rant by targeting Blazquez directly, slamming his producer as a "wishy-washy who has no idea what is going on."
On-air confrontation over studio error
Blazquez attempted to soothe the host and took full responsibility for the mishap, promising not to stall again. However, Sandilands refused to accept her apology until she revealed the name of the colleague who made the mistake.
"I promise I won't stall again..." Blazquez began, before Sandilands interrupted her live on air.
"It's not stall. It's lie! It's lie. It's lie. I said I take accountability. I said it several times and you wouldn't say," Sandilands told her.
Blazquez continued to apologise to her boss, telling him, "Because it's on me at the end of the day..."
Sandilands rejected her explanation, insisting that she owed him an immediate answer. "But I'm not asking whether it's on you. I'm your boss, so I expect you to be honest with me and every f**king question I ask you. Every question!" he said. "It's not throwing someone under the bus, it's answering your superior's question. That's all."
Blazquez pleaded with the presenter, stating, "I'm sorry, I won't do it again." Sandilands replied: "All I asked for, just once in my life, is for someone to back me up. Is that asking too much?"
Personal attacks on female staff
As the confrontation escalated inside the studio, another staff member attempted to intervene. Young news reader Mary Madigan stepped in to stand up for Blazquez during the live broadcast.
Sandilands quickly dismissed Madigan's intervention, snapping at her, "I don't give a f**k what you think." Although he went on to describe Madigan as a "kind" and "smart" woman, he criticized her appearance, taking aim at her "shocking fringe".
Sandilands also turned his attention to Blazquez's physical appearance during the exchange. While complimenting her white teeth, he openly mocked moles on her skin.
"You've got a mole on your head... some dirty moles everywhere. Just cut it out," Sandilands demanded live on air.
Blazquez remained visibly angry and upset throughout the protracted exchange. Sandilands highlighted her facial expression during the argument, noting her "demented look". Blazquez defended herself by saying, "I am just processing," but admitted that she was unable to hide her displeasure over the incident.
Sandilands is one of Australia's most prominent and controversial commercial radio shock jocks, famous for his unfiltered live broadcasting style. His new program, Kyle Sandilands Live, operates as a paid subscription series where listeners pay for direct access to exclusive audio broadcasts.
Echoes of previous studio fallout
Production staff eventually managed to calm Sandilands down and successfully launched the video clip. However, Sandilands repeatedly complained that the disorganisation on set was similar to what he had experienced while working at commercial radio network KIIS FM.
The clash, particularly Sandilands describing his producer as "wishy-washy", strongly echoed his previous on-air blow-up with former co-star Jackie 'O' Henderson prior to the headline-grabbing cancellation of their breakfast show in March.
That previous exchange occurred on February 20, when Sandilands slammed Henderson live on air over her "fixation" with astrology, claiming it was affecting her work and sending her out of the studio in tears.
"Your fixation on this has made you almost unworkable. You are off with the fairies with this s**t. It's mental," Sandilands said during the February incident. "It's too much. It's affecting everything else. You're too fixated on it. Every segment, every time you've spoken, you don't even know what's going on."
KIIS FM is a major Australian commercial FM radio network owned by media company Australian Radio Network (ARN). The heated argument between the long-time broadcasting duo led directly to the termination of their lucrative broadcasting contracts, which were valued at $100 million.
Ongoing legal battles
Following the abrupt cancellation of the breakfast show in March, both presenters pursued separate legal action against their former broadcasting employer.
Sandilands launched a wrongful termination court battle against the network, which he has since settled out of court for $12.09 million.
Henderson's legal action remains ongoing. She is currently seeking $82.25 million in damages from her former employer, with her lawsuit currently proceeding in the Federal Court of Australia.
