Leopold the Cat has been named the most popular children's character in Russia in a new survey of more than 1,500 people, the press service of streaming platform KION Music told news outlet Gazeta.Ru.
The research was conducted ahead of the August 20 birthday of Cheburashka, another classic Soviet cartoon character.
The survey established a top ten list of favorite characters from children's literature and animation. Following Leopold, from the Soviet animated film The Adventures of Leopold the Cat, respondents chose Cheburashka, Doctor Aybolit, Winnie-the-Pooh, Karlson, The Little Prince, the Hare from Nu, Pogodi!, Neznayka, Cat Matroskin, and Uncle Fyodor.
Parental views on children's media
All respondents stated that exposing children to leisure content such as music, books, cinema, and cartoons during rest periods is necessary for a child's comprehensive development. Those surveyed noted that heroes of such works teach children kindness, friendship skills, justice, honesty, responsibility, and self-confidence.
Parents also shared the songs and children's productions they have introduced or plan to introduce to their children. These included Crocodile Gena's Song (Let Them Run Clumsily), A Smile, Song of Friends, Winged Swings, We Will Survive This Trouble, Song of the Lion Cub and the Turtle, Clouds, Antoshka, and Chunga-Changa.
Educational media and modern skills
On viewing habits for educational material, almost a quarter of parents, or 23 percent, reported that their child watches educational content regularly. A further 44 percent indicated fluctuating viewing frequency, while 18 percent admitted they do not know for sure what content their children select, and 16 percent confirmed a complete lack of interest in educational formats.
Beyond general moral qualities, financial literacy emerged as the most in-demand set of skills and knowledge required for a child in the modern world. Survey participants identified foreign language proficiency, computer skills, and artificial intelligence as the next most essential attributes.
