Furthermore, while the measure remains in place, these products cannot be used by beauty professionals and consumers either.

According to Anvisa, the decision, which is preventive and temporary, was taken due to the increase in the number of cases of serious side effects associated with the use of this type of product, and the main complaints of those affected are: loss of vision temporary, burning eyes, redness, eye swelling, headache, itching and intense tearing.

The available information shows that the problems have occurred, above all, in people who have wet their hair after using these products, for example, in a sea bath, in a swimming pool or in the rain.

In collaboration with state and municipal health surveillance agencies, Anvisa continues to investigate the relationship between the use of these products and cases of eye poisoning.

WHAT CAN CAUSE THE USE OF OINTMENTS?

Second doctor Tiago Cesar Pereira Ferreiraophthalmologist and professor of ophthalmic surgery at the Faculdade Ciências Médicas de MG, some ointments contain chemicals in their composition which, when in contact with the eyes, can cause irritation and serious problems.

“There have been many cases of very intense keratitis, which is inflammation of the cornea, with irritation of the conjunctiva, leading to bleeding from the subconjunctival vessels,” the doctor points out.

Therefore, the specialist advises that the ideal is to avoid any type of ointment, glitter, glue or other chemical product coming into contact with the eyes.

Corneal ulcers can also occur in more advanced cases, increasing the chances of contamination, irreversible scarring in the eye, and even vision loss, according to Dr. Tiago.
