The costume designer of the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever After, Ruth E. Carter made history by becoming the first black woman to win an Academy Award twice. The 62-year-old artist took home her second Oscar for best costume design at the ceremony on Sunday the 12th.
His record comes after Denzel Washington became the first black man to win two Academy Awards in 2002, followed by Mahershala Ali in 2019.
In her acceptance speech, Ruth thanked “the Academy for recognizing the superhero that she is a black woman. She endures, she loves, she wins. She is every woman in this movie. She is my mother,” she said before revealing that her mother , 101 years old, had recently died.
Ruth E. Carter received her first Academy Award in 2018, in the same category, for her work in Black Panther.
