Legend has it that in the fourth century, exactly on December 29, a Catholic saint called San Pantaleone, dressed in rags and very hungry, wandered through the streets of a village in Italy.
So he knocked on a very humble family home and asked for something to eat. They didn’t have much to offer, but nevertheless they invited him in, sat down at the table with him and shared the meager supper: seven units of dumplings each.
At the end of the meal, San Pantaleone thanked him and left. And what was the surprise of the family when he took out the plates, there was a huge amount of money under them.
LUCKY GNOCH – how to get lucky and lucky
Since then, every 29 is the Gnocchi Della Fortuna Day, or Lucky Dumplings. Tradition has it that whoever eats the gnocchi that day, placing a note under the plate, guarantees luck or fortune. Some say that at the end of the meal the money should be donated to the needy, but most say it should be kept in the wallet until the next 29th and only then can it be used.
