Spotted fever: American confirms patient’s death

The epidemiological surveillance of Americancity ​​near Campinas within São Paulo, confirmed this Friday, the 16th, the Rocky Mountain spotted fever as the cause of death of a 58-year-old resident. The death, also confirmed by the State Department of Health, occurred on 8 June.

According to Surveillance, the likely location of the infection would be the city of Limeira, where a teenager died of the disease in March this year. Until the end of the afternoon, the town hall of Limeira had not been informed of this death.

Last week, the Limeira justice ordered the town hall to carry out serological tests on about 40 capybaras that inhabit the Jardim do Lago Ecological Park, in the urban area. The lawsuit was brought by a residents’ association alleging the risk of transmission of spotted fever. The city said it has sought permission from the state department of the environment to handle the animals. The state file reported that the data sent by the city hall is under analysis.

Cases in Campinas

The State Department of Health confirmed, this Friday 16, that the 38-year-old woman who was at a concert by the singer Seu Jorge at the Fazenda Santa Margarida, in Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo, contracted spotted fever. With this, the disease outbreak toll on the event farm reaches 4 confirmed deaths and 1 positive case and 9 suspected cases under investigation. This Friday, the farm delivered a plan with measures to prevent future cases of the disease to the town hall.

Of the suspected cases, four are being investigated in Santa Isabel, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. Two people are hospitalized. The four residents worked on the Feijoada do Rosa event, held on the farm, on May 27.

The Santa Isabel health department reported that, in total, eight people from the city worked at the Feijoada do Rosa event on the night of May 27 at the farm in Campinas. Of these, four showed symptoms. Two are hospitalized and two others are monitored by health services.

The municipality awaits the results of the tests that are carried out at the Adolfo Lutz Institute and monitors the progress of the patients. The public has been warned to report signs of tick bites and symptoms of the disease immediately.

Two other suspected cases were reported on Friday 16 from the Itupeva town hall. The two people were at singer Seu Jorge’s concert, held on June 3, at the same facility. Three other suspected cases in the city were unrelated to the event.

In Campinas, in addition to the case confirmed this Friday, there is another one being investigated on a person who was on feijoada. There are also two suspects in Jundiaí of people who were at the same event at the Fazenda Santa Margarida. Jundiaí Epidemiological Surveillance is also investigating five other suspected cases, in which people reported recently visiting green areas in the municipality itself and in other cities. Test results are awaited.
