Pressure cooker, microwave and more: how to avoid explosions in the kitchen

Some kitchen utensils can be dangerous if we don’t take the proper precautions; know how to use them correctly

In the past few weeks, two pressure cooker incidents have left us stunned: In the first, a young woman recorded a pressure cooker exploding in the kitchen of her home and it went viral on TikTok. In the second, a pressure cooker exploded live during an advertisement on TV Aparecida.

These two cases made us reflect on how small attitudes can cause very serious accidents in the kitchen, not only with pressure cookers, but also with other utensils and appliances.

Among the potential dangers in the kitchen, explosions are definitely a concern we should take seriously. Therefore, in this text, we will explore the essential precautions to avoid explosions in four crucial areas of the kitchen: pressure cooker, microwave, glass stovetop and oven.

1. Pressure cooker

  • Check that the gasket is in good condition before each use.
  • Never fill the pan beyond the recommended limit.
  • Keep the relief valve clean and unobstructed.
  • Keep children away from the kitchen while the pot is in use.
  • Avoid opening the pan immediately after cooking; wait for the pressure to release naturally.

2. Microwave oven

  • Use suitable containers, preferably glass or ceramic, especially avoiding metals and plastics that are not made to be placed in the microwave.
  • Do not heat airtight containers as pressure can cause explosions.
  • Stir food well before reheating to avoid pressure points.
  • Avoid overheating the water; add a wooden spoon or other object to prevent the water from boiling suddenly.

3. Glass cover of the stove

  • Do not close the glass lid of the stove if one of the burners is still lit (with the flame lit).
  • Wait for stove burners to cool before closing glass lid.
  • Be careful when placing heavy or very hot objects on top of the stove lid, this too could cause an explosion.

4. Oven

  • Avoid non-ovenproof glass containers, especially if they’re cold.
  • Do not cover dishes with aluminum foil to seal completely, allow air to circulate.
  • When cooking foods in their skins (such as potatoes), make small cuts to prevent pressure buildup.
  • Do not overload the oven, leave room for heat to circulate.

Always remember that kitchen safety is a priority. By taking these precautions, you’ll not only avoid unwanted explosions, but you’ll also ensure a pleasant and worry-free dining experience.
