Abdominoplasty requires prior weight loss
«In men this weight loss depends on a reduction in intra-abdominal contents, so the pre-operative period is generally longer and more difficult. Preparation for this surgery also includes quitting smoking at least four weeks in advance, following a healthy and balanced diet and avoiding certain medications,” explains the doctor.
A tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes two to four hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. The surgeon makes an incision that allows the removal of excess skin and fat while approaching and suturing the abdominal muscles.
“During a full tummy tuck the skin around the belly button will also be reshaped,” says the plastic surgeon.
Immediately after surgery, the patient is hospitalized for 12 to 24 hours, during which he receives medications for pain, prevention of thrombosis and antibiotics.
“Also, he has a pneumatic compressor on his leg, elastic socks and an elastic net covering his entire abdomen. During this period you can eat and get out of bed with help,” says Tácito.
At home the patient must remain at rest. «However, it is advisable for the patient to walk within the perimeter of their home, with the help of a companion to promote blood circulation. This walking should be done by bending forward for the first 10-15 days to avoid forcing the stitches,” says the doctor.

As regards basic care, it is possible to shower on the third day as long as you have the help of a companion.
«The diet should be rich in liquids, laxative foods and fibre, as in the first few days it may be difficult to go to the toilet. The return to the office occurs 3 to 7 days after surgery, when the surgeon evaluates the vitality of the skin and incisions. In general, the first week is the one in which the patient feels most uncomfortable, but this improves over time so much so that many return to work after 30 days,” says the doctor.
According to Tácito, for a period of approximately 45 days the use of the compression mesh, also known as the post-operative belt, is mandatory.
“Since each patient’s recovery time is different, follow the surgeon’s instructions for each specific case. This will also help minimize the appearance of surgical scars,” concludes the doctor.
