The counterfeiting of Ozempic is a cause for concern for the European Medicines Agency

According to the EMA, the success of the drug has led to the appearance of plagiarized units of the drug

That Ozempic is a global success is nothing new. The problem is that counterfeit versions of the drug are emerging, which have become a real rage after celebrities like Elon Musk started using the diabetes medicine to lose weight.

According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in a statement warned this Wednesday (18), fraudulent units of the medicine have been identified in several countries (which the agency has not identified) and imported through “distributors in Germany and Austria”.

“Pens falsely labeled as the diabetes medicine Ozempic (semaglutide, 1 mg, solution for injection) have been identified in wholesale companies in the EU and the UK,” warns the EMA statement, which also reports how it was plagiarism identified: “In the European Union (EU), each medicine package has a unique 2D barcode and serial number so it can be tracked in an electronic system. When counterfeit Ozempic packages were scanned, it was The serial numbers were found to be inactive, which alerted operators to the possible forgery.”

Since the counterfeit medicines were found this time in legal channels, such as pharmacies, and not in alternative outlets on the Internet, the authorities became even more concerned about the medicines already sold. EMA officials, however, said no harm had been identified for patients who purchased the irregular drug.

A notice from Novo Nordisk, the main manufacturer of Ozempic, stressed that users of the medicine should consult “the package leaflet of Ozempic to find out what the original pens of the medicine should look like” and, under no circumstances, use suspect batches. The EMA has ordered patients to immediately return injections that do not have the original characteristics of the drug to pharmacies.
