Damp objects and summer heat facilitate the excessive reproduction of the fungus that causes candidiasis.
Wearing a wet bikini for hours is a major cause of vaginal health in the summer. The reason lies in the combination of the humidity of swimsuits and high seasonal temperatures, which can facilitate the development of candidiasis. Symptoms of the infection are burning, itching and whitish discharge from the vagina.
Candidiasis is an infection most often caused by the fungus Candida albicans. The microorganism is generally present in the vaginal microbiome without causing discomfort. However, in conditions of high humidity and temperature, it reproduces excessively, causing gynecological problems.
Therefore, during the hottest periods – which are expected to become even more frequent due to intense heat waves -, the ideal is to avoid using wet clothing for long periods.
The gynecologist at the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual (HSPE) and head of the Lower Genital Tract Pathology Sector, Dr. Ilzo Vianna Júnior, recommends wearing dry clothes to replace the wet bikini after swimming in the pool and the sea.
«It is advisable to avoid the constant use of synthetic fabrics and daily pads, as they make ventilation of the genital region difficult and facilitate the reproduction of the fungus. Another tip is to sleep without underwear.”, she explains.
Other influencing factors
Conditions such as a weakened immune system, patients undergoing treatment with immunosuppressive drugs, antibiotics and corticosteroids, as well as diabetes, also facilitate the onset of candidiasis.
The diagnosis of candidiasis is made through a gynecological examination. Testing is essential to identify the fungus and rule out other infections or diseases with similar symptoms. Treatment is carried out with antifungal drugs and the discomfort is relieved within a few days.
Candidiasis is not considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI). The problem can be developed by imbalances of various causes in the vaginal microbiome. However, when the problem is symptomatic, it can be transmitted to the sexual partner.
