Find out how to start fighting illnesses such as anxiety, depression and panic
White January is a campaign born in 2014. The aim of the campaign is to draw the attention of people and society to the importance of mental health care. The theme for 2024 aims to raise awareness among the population about mental and emotional health care, based on the prevention of diseases resulting from stress, such as anxiety, depression and panic.
The campaign has already gone global, having been carried out in several countries, such as Angola, Colombia, Japan, the United States, Portugal and others, broadening its impact and promoting mental health awareness on a global scale. The choice of January is due to the fact that, during this period, people are more likely to make reflections, plans and goals for the year to come. The white color symbolizes a blank sheet or canvas, where everyone can write or rewrite their own story.
“January is the month that marks the beginning of a new year, a new cycle, a new opportunity to start over. Many people make plans, goals, resolutions and expectations for the next 12 months, but things don’t always go as planned, and this can lead to frustration, disappointment, anxiety and even depression,” he explains Gesika Amorimmaster in Medical Education, pediatrician with specialization in Neurology and Psychiatry.
The White January campaign
The White January campaign promotes various activities, such as conferences, workshops, conversation circles, walks and much more, with the aim of informing, educating and raising awareness on issues related to mental health, such as prevention, treatment, stigma, rights and public policies , among others.
It also aims to encourage actions of care for oneself and others, encouraging the strengthening of emotional bonds, solidarity, empathy and understanding. Additionally, the campaign advises people to seek professional help when needed, whether from psychologists, psychiatrists or other healthcare professionals.
“Anxiety is a feeling of fear, worry, or nervousness when faced with an uncertain or threatening situation. Depression is a mood disorder that causes profound sadness, loss of interest, guilt, low self-esteem, and other symptoms that affect on quality of life. Both are serious diseases that require adequate treatment, as they can lead to serious complications, such as social isolation, substance abuse, self-mutilation and suicide”, warns Gesika.
White January is an initiative that aims to raise awareness of the importance of mental and emotional health and encourage seeking professional help when necessary. Remember that mental health is of paramount importance; Taking care of yourself is an act of love and respect. Don’t be ashamed or afraid to ask for help.
