Women on the road: only 31% of fines come from them

The Detran-SP survey shows how women are more respectful of traffic limits and rules in the state; learn more

The Traffic Department of the State of São Paulo (Detran-SP) has published an unprecedented survey that proves this Women, in general, respect traffic rules more. In 2023, of the more than 8 million fines applied in the state of São Paulo, only 31% were committed by women, while men committed the remaining 69%.

This investigation also uncovered some of the major infractions committed in the state, including:

  • Driving at a speed 20% higher than the maximum speed allowed (1.8 million committed by men and 838 thousand committed by women)
  • Failure to register the vehicle within 30 days of the change of ownership (411.8 thousand men and 159.2 women)
  • Travel to a place/time not permitted by law – rotation (404.8 thousand men and 242 thousand women)
  • The red light advances (308.5 thousand men and 153 thousand women)
  • Parking in violation of the rules (215 thousand men and 147.5 thousand women)
  • Driving a registered vehicle without a regular license (195.6 thousand men and 80.5 women)

It is understood that one of the factors leading to the lower number of fines is that women tend to drive more carefully than men. In other words, we’re not talking about “a woman driving is a constant danger”, you know?

Involvement in road accidents

Also thanks to this greater attention, women are involved in fewer road accidents. Accidents are essentially events in which damage occurs to the vehicle or its cargo or injuries to people or animals. This type of situation can also cause property damage or damage to the road or the environment. The word “accident” is broader and can involve other cases.

Therefore, as shown by a survey by Infosiga, a system that is part of the Respect for Life Program, managed by Detran-SP, there are even fewer women who die in road accidents. In January this year, for example, there were 424 road victims and of these approximately 16.7% were women and 82.8% men.

In 2023, of the 5,427 fatal road accidents, only 17.1% of deaths involved women and over 82% involved men. This scenario has been repeated for several years, with women representing a minority of road fatalities. They also appear in smaller numbers when it comes to pedestrian deaths or accidents involving motorcycles and bicycles.
