The goal of IPq, in São Paulo, is to address issues related to aging
The IPq (Institute of Psychiatry of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo) is looking for homosexual women aged 50 or over, who present mild depressive symptoms and are interested in participating in group psychotherapy (in person).
The objective of the Psychotherapy Clinic at the IPq Neuroscience Laboratory is to address issues such as emotional, family and professional relationships, prejudice and maturity.
Redefining life stories
“The main objective of this group is to be a place where these women can be understood, welcomed and, above all, can give a new meaning to their life stories, to be able to continue with their loves, affections and choices, and begin to give new ways of understanding one’s past and eliminating what is not good for him”, describes psychologist Dorli Kamkhagi, one of the coordinators of the group.
“Group psychotherapy is a forum where topics can be much more in-depth, because people talk and can be listened to, unlike individual psychotherapy, which is extremely important,” he adds.
Prejudice breeds illness
With more than 25 years of working on aging issues, the psychologist says she and her team have long been interested in issues involving gay men, who haven’t had much representation in psychotherapy groups.
We formed several groups and it was important to understand how these people were suffering from loneliness, and how they saw the future in a sad and dramatic way because they didn’t have children, or because their family didn’t accept them”, he explained.
According to Dorli, her clinical experience shows how difficult it was for these women to “come out” and how vulnerable these people are to physical, mental and emotional illnesses due to the prejudices they face in a country that claims to be open and modern , but it isn’t.
There will be 20 sessions (free), on Thursdays, from 9:00 to 10:30, at IPq (Rua Dr. Ovídio Pires de Campos, 785 – near Metrô Clínicas or Oscar Freire, in São Paulo).
