Treatment involves a combination of the use of technology and lifestyle changes
Summary
Cellulite is an inflammation of the subcutaneous tissue that compromises the microcirculation and lymphatic system of the region. Factors such as estrogen, overweight, fat/muscle mass imbalance, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, intestinal dysbiosis influence the appearance of cellulite on the lower limbs, buttocks, abdomen and arms.
Cellulite, also called gynoid lipodystrophy, affects almost all women and some men. Although it is omnipresent in women, not everyone knows that it is an evolutionary disease and that in more advanced stages it can cause pain, local temperature changes and discomfort.
“Cellulite is in fact an inflammation of the subcutaneous tissue or adipose tissue, where these adipose cells undergo a process of alteration of their good morphology, presenting excess fat inside and deformities of their walls with a condition of fibrosis of these structures. This results in irregularities that end up projecting onto the surface of the skin and leading to the formation of a heterogeneous relief and a skin full of indentations and protrusions, depressions and ripples”, explains dermatologist Claudia Marçal, full member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
«It is necessary to differentiate the degrees of cellulite, because when there is inflammation of the local skin tissue, the microcirculation and the lymphatic system of the area are compromised. In this more advanced condition which involves deformities of the area with pain and alterations in cellular morphology, it is necessary to intervene with synergistic treatments and strategies in addition to lifestyle changes,” he adds.
The influence of estrogen
The preponderant factor for the high incidence of cellulite in women is the hormone estrogen, which is directly involved in the process of this inflammation.
“There is also a genetic predisposition, but several lifestyle factors and triggers are involved. Being overweight, an imbalance between the level of fat and muscle mass (which is why some thin women have cellulite), a poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle, vascular changes, all of these can influence the appearance of cellulite.” , explains Claudia Marçal. .
The doctor explains that 70% of women who suffer from cellulite may also suffer from difficulties in the venous return of the lower limbs.
There has also been a lot of talk about intestinal functioning in recent dermatology conferences.
“Patients suffering from intestinal dysbiosis, a condition in which there is an imbalance of bacteria present in the intestine, may suffer from the colonization of a group of microorganisms that alter the levels of estrogen circulating in the body. Altered circulating levels of estrogen can contribute to obesity, metabolic syndrome and cellulite,” explains Claudia Marçal.
“Gut dysbiosis leads to malabsorption of nutrients, insulin resistance and inflammation which will act as a trigger for an imbalance in the body. With intestinal malfunction we will have the release of toxic substances from the bacterial cell wall into the blood, a process called metabolic endotoxemia. This whole process is generated by poor nutrition, high levels of stress and excessive consumption of drugs, such as omeprazole and even some types of antibiotics,” explains pharmacist Patrícia França, scientific manager of Biotec Dermocosméticos.
Most affected regions
The areas most affected by cellulite are the hips, buttocks, thighs, especially the inner thighs and the back region, the lower abdomen and the arms.
“As far as classifications go, cellulite can start with grade I, a mild and asymptomatic grade, and gradually evolve based on lack of treatment,” explains the dermatologist. “We cannot say that cellulite has a cure; it can be controlled and improved. And this depends a lot on the patient’s lifestyle habits, the moment in which he is living, the quality of the hours of sleep, his diet, the practice of exercises physical and treatments that are carried out”, underlines the dermatologist.
Most common treatments
The dermatologist explains that cellulite must be treated with a combination of treatments.
“I really like using radio frequency to improve the give in this area. One of the technologies is Nuera Tight, which features the MTS system, capable of stimulating the collagen necessary to firm the skin and also acting at a subcutaneous level to treat localized fat, reducing its volume. This compression brings important results against cellulite,” explains Claudia Marçal.
“I also combine it with macro- and microfocused ultrasound to improve collagen stimulation. I like to use intradermotherapy with substances that will improve blood perfusion and lymphatic retention. The specifically manual lymphatic drainage is also very welcome,” explains the doctor.
Another important doctor-recommended treatment is Onda Coolwaves, which treats indentations and protrusions using microwaves.
The power of supplements
Pharmacist Patrícia França highlights the power of nutraceutical supplements in the treatment of cellulite.
“To combat intestinal malfunction, probiotic supplementation has been one approach adopted. In this sense, supplementation with Betamune SC 70 will also help, since this beta-glucan acts as a prebiotic, helping to rebalance the intestinal flora, improving digestion and offering “food” to the beneficial bacteria that act as a barrier to prevent the entry of microorganisms, strengthening them, preventing the entry of harmful bacteria. Another very important substance is Exsynutriment, an organic silicon stabilized in marine collagen, which helps preserve the intestinal epithelium thanks to its compatibility with the molecules present in the cell membrane”, explains the pharmacist.
Furthermore, the scientific manager of Biotec reminds that substances with anti-inflammatory action must be used: «FC Oral contains DHA and EPA in its composition, and helps control inflammation by modulating the production of substances that will activate the inflammatory process, the so-called proinflammatory cytokines ”, says Patrícia.
Another substance that can help with physical activity when you change your lifestyle is Slim Green Coffee.
“It is composed of caffeine and chlorogenic acid, which will increase thermogenesis, facilitating fat burning, promoting not only the fight against cellulite, but also weight loss, as well as having an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action,” explains the pharmaceutical .
“Aesthetic changes can and must be treated to prevent the progression of the disease, which ends up causing disorders with clinical alterations, low self-esteem, developmental discomfort, deformities of the body contour and pain for patients,” concludes Claudia Marçal.
