Discover the exciting story of Eduarda Pinheiro, an animal protector who, after being touched by the catastrophe in southern Brazil, rolled up her sleeves and went there to help those who could not save themselves.
During the Rio Grande do Sul flood, some images marked the tragedy. The caramel-colored horse on top of a roof, motionless, for days, is one of them. The frightened look of dogs and cats, hungry and cold in the midst of a desolate environment is something difficult to forget, especially for those who were there. If we get emotional in front of the computer, cell phone or television screen, what can we say about those who were literally experiencing all this anguish firsthand?
When we spoke Eduardo Pinheiro, animal protector of São Paulo, we were able to understand more broadly the true meaning of the word PURPOSE. And it is precisely this journey of inspiration that he tells us about in this chat.
What made you go to Rio Grande do Sul?
Eduardo says so The decision to volunteer to help with the rescue effort was almost immediate. “The first thing that came to mind was ‘who will help the animals?’ And this scared me, because I saw many people helping other people but I saw almost nothing saving animals!
More difficult moments
After getting a boat, he began searching the water. And the sadness was great in seeing that, for many, it was already too late. “So I already counted more than 20 dead dog bodies, two horses, an ox, a cat, dead people floating… All very sad.”
She says that, amidst so much loss, with the population perhaps facing what could be the worst time of their lives, the lack of empathy surprised her. “Submerged houses, floating furniture, people looking for their loved ones and, in the meantime, thieves took the opportunity to try to loot the empty houses… and even the people who were on the boat. Regrettable”Eduarda reports.
“Excuse me”
In a scene that moved the internet, Eduarda arrives at a house where a Rottweiller dog was chained up, malnourished, on the verge of death, in a completely flooded house. She hugs the animal and asks ‘Excuse me’. For the humans who abandoned him there, without even giving him the chance to help him, for the carelessness and lack of love towards a living being… In short, for the negligence of the owners who should have taken care of the dog’s life and he did not.
Fear at dusk
According to the protector, when it got dark, it was even more difficult to continue the mission. “We didn’t know if we would return to land. There was a moment when I was terribly afraid! We couldn’t see anything in front of the boat… So, at any moment, we could hit and capsize with all those animals.”
Scope
After the most critical moment of the tragedy, we ask ourselves: what drove her to leave the comforts of her home and go to Rio Grande do Sul to save animals, often putting her own life at risk? “I believe my mission in this world is this: to save animals. I have always believed that God sent me with the purpose of being their voice. Therefore, I will forever fight for this cause. In short, more than 100 lives have been lost saved! And I would do it all over again!”
